Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
America's best selling tanning guide, now on video!
  • Crucial if you don't have access to hands-on instruction
  • Helps you see how to do each step of the wet-scrape process
  • Up-to-date with the latest info and most efficient methods
  • More than two hours of detailed, expert, step-by-step instruction

Two years in the making, this video is easily the most detailed, comprehensive and easy to follow guide to brain tanning. Novices get to see what each step looks like: what it looks like when the grain is coming off properly, how much effort goes into softening, what different odd textures on the skin mean, what good, pumping smoke looks like and on and on. This kind of stuff is incredibly helpful in learning this tactile art.

Experienced tanners will appreciate learning the tweaks and improvements that Matt has learned in the six years since he wrote Deerskins into Buckskins (and received ideas and feedback from thousands of tanners); including the 15 minute step that makes a whole series of improvements in the process (easier, more thorough brain penetration, easier to soften hides, and hides that turn out incredibly, incredibly, soft in the end). We guarantee that you'll learn a lot from this video!

DVD Special Features

  • Chapter menu so you can go directly to any step (great for quickly referencing information)
  • Quick-links to recipes and charts

5 out of 5 stars Very well done!! Even better than the book!   December 2, 2008
I have read the Deerskins into Buckskins book by the same author and the book is very good but the DVD is 100 time better!! Matt goes through every step in the process showing you the right way to do it and how to correct mistakes. He also shows alternatives methods for the steps that allow it like using soap and oil or eggs as replacements for brains. He also shows all of the little things that are hard to describe in words like how the hide should look at the end of each step or how much pressure to use when stretching the hide. I can't wait to get out and try making buckskin again!

I have seen similar DVDs marketed to this audience that look like nothing more than home movies but this DVD is very well done. I noticed some skipping (brief halts) during the opening title but after that the DVD played fine. The audio and picture were very clear and Matt was always easy to understand. My wife is not into brain tainning but she watched the DVD with me and said it was like watching the Discovery Channel. I would call that pretty high praise.

I found the video very informative and helpful in learning how to make buckskins. It really shortened the learning curve by giving step by step instructions and tips on how things are done. I would recomend this material to anyone interested in learning this skill.
