This one was alright. Just alright. Wasn't anything great, but I'll still pick up the next one to see if it gets any better.
Rachel Morgan is a witch with a purpose. As a sort of supernatural bounty hunter, she is charged with keeping the peace in the Hollows, a melting pot containing all the various creatures the supernatural world has to offer. Problem is, Rachel isn't super good at her job, and her boss is out to get her. However, her former partner Ivy, is good at her job and is more than willing to help Rachel out of her contract. Problem is, Rachel doesn't exactly trust Ivy because she's a half-vampire. But her mistrust isn't enough to keep her from joining forces with Ivy, and a pixie named Jenks. Together they form a business of their own, and it isn't long before they get their first job.
I really did not like Rachel at all. She's just a very annoying character and her overblown mistrust in everyone is grating. Hopefully she grows up a little bit in the next book. That would have made this so much better, although it does give her character room to grow. Ivy and Jenks are fun characters though. And Kim Harrison did a wonderful job fleshing out the supernatural world with details. Hopefully the next book is able to change my opinion.

This series was recommended by a friend. At least I thought she was a friend. I don't know if she even likes me after having read the first book of this series. It was close to torture. It takes A LOT for me to not like a book. I can read almost ANYTHING, but this book... I can't even put it into words. I had to force myself to finish reading this and when I was done all I kept saying to myself was "WTH was that and what did I do to my friend to tick her off?" What really drives me insane is that I was so revved up by her praise for series this is I went out and bought the first three books right away. Now I have two books sitting around that will more than likely NEVER be read.

I have been waiting to read this series for quite a while. I was a little disappointed with this book but I am not sure it is the author's fault. I started out listening on iPod and I got irritated with it. The reader is ok. That wasn't the problem. I just got very frustrated and felt like it was taking forever. So I gave up on the audio book and picked up the paperback version and I felt much better.
I enjoyed the character of Rachel Morgan. She is tough, smart, and has an every-person charm about her. However, I did find the story a little repetitive. Rachel comes up with a scheme to complete her task, she doesn't think things through and ends up getting in a jam, and her friends have to bail her out. This happens several times throughout the story and it starts to get a bit tedious. But as I said before, I was already losing patience with the audio book and that may have colored my opinion. I still plan to read the rest of the series eventually and I hope for better luck next time.

This books start out interesting enough, but what a let down a few chapters in. Don't bother.
Very good novel November 11, 2008
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Each character was written smoothly and with rich personalities. The plot is fun with lots of layers that set her up for other novels and will hopefully will be pursued and answered(ex. who sent the demon after Rachel and Trent; what exactly did Trent's dad do to Rachel at the camp).
So if I liked it so much, then why did it give it only 4 stars? That has to do with Rachel. Her character shows a lot of immaturity in this book. I don't have the book beside me, so I can't cite specific examples, but Rachel's stubborness to do it exactly her way or no way and not to listen to what anyone (even those with actual experience in the field) says leads her to do things that being an adult, she should not do. This is also shown in the next book, which I've also already read.
But, to me, that is easily forgiven. After all, who wants the heroine of this book to be a Mary Sue? That just wouldn't be fun and she wouldn't get in or get out of some of the situations she has. I would like to caution the author, though, to definitely have a plan for this series. Have a definite beginning, middle, and end. Do not try to continue to write this series forever and go the way of LKH and more recently Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor. Brilliant authors, who, for one reason or another, have had a tremendous decline in the quality of their books. A great many of their fans have become so disappointed in them they refuse to buy or even read any more of their books. Let's all hope Kim will not eventually be added to that list.
