1 out of 5 stars please don't let daughter's read   November 27, 2008

i just finished reading 'pants on fire' which was a really cute book. i was excited to see what else meg cabot has done. i read this book and skimmed the whole thing. i was very upset that the whole book focused on her big night of losing her virginity. there are some of us that still believe that sex is sacred - for a forever commitment with one person. this book made me really mad. morals are changing in our world and girls need to be warned and taught, but it should not be encouraged! i will be very hesitant with her books in the future.

1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment   November 10, 2008
Once again, I enjoyed a Cabot book ("All American Girl") only to be disappointed in the sequel. The Sam and David in this book were markedly different from the first book. In spite of all the success Sam experiences in AAG, she whines and angsts through the entire book. Her self-confidence has markedly declined and she shows no growth in her world view. Sam's parents, as in all the Cabot books I've read, are caricatures of suburban adults. The whole sex thing, which is really just a vehicle for Cabot's left-wing agenda (can she write a book without preaching for the DNC?), is very annoying. I've left a comment to a 15 yo here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1F848OSC47CBZ/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0060724528&nodeID=#wasThisHelpful that sums up my thoughts about that aspect, except I'd like to add one more observation. Sam's sister reveals that she is a virgin. In spite of being older and having dated Jake for 3+ years she thought about the consequences of having sex and chose not to do so. She has consistently thought about, planned, and lived her life in a conscious, adult manner. Sam, in contrast, reacts to events and adapts her behavior to appease people in an authentic teen manner. Sam has impulsive sex with David while Lucy recognized the problems with Jake and chose not to. Yet their parents are worried about Lucy taking bad decisions while they trust Sam to do the right thing. When has Sam ever given them the evidence that she would take a good decision? The end of the book speaks volumes for Cabot's motivations for writing which I think go far beyond telling stories into indoctrination. This is my last Cabot book.

1 out of 5 stars What a bummer   August 24, 2008
I loved the first story about Sam! I found her exciting refreshing and full of life. I'm not sure what happened to that character but she has completely disappeared in this book. This entire story is about one and only one thing sex. Sam doesn't know if she wants to have sex with David. That's all this book talks about. Not how school is, not her best friend, or her family, or college. Nope just sex. I was very disappointed that this book didn't have more of an interesting plot line. I cant believe that this is even the same author. I hope that all of her books are not like this because they are not worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Just What I want to read about   July 2, 2008
Most parents think us teenagers are innocent and they totally underestimate us. Parents think teens are to young to read, talk about, and think about sex, even though we talk about it and think about it and read about it. So this book sort of made it clear that no matter what parents think your in control of your own destiny and sure you need to be safe about it and all but parents don't control your thoughts and I don't get why parents treat sex like its a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo for Bravery   May 16, 2008
I almost never post reviews, but this time I felt compelled. I've read almost all of Cabot's backlist, adult and teen. And I love her voice, but she often skirts far away from controversy.

I LOVE that she tackled this one. In the last few years, Judy Blume and Norma Klein have given way to censorship and PC thinking. You have the "sweet" books and the "trashy" books and very little in between. I'm so happy that Cabot acknowledged the reality that many of her readers WILL have sex before marriage, regardless of what their parents hope. Girls, even sweet girls, NEED to see realistic representations of sexuality, and I think those authors brave enough to tackle the issue need to be applauded.
