Product Description
Avalon High, I was starting to think, might not be so bad after all. Maybe it's not where Ellie wants to be, but if you have to start at a new school, Avalon High is typical enough: There's Lance, the jock. Jennifer, the cheerleader. And Will, senior class president, quarterback, and all-around good guy. But not everyone at Avalon High is who they appear to be . . . not even, as Ellie is about to discover, herself. As a bizarre drama begins to unfold, Ellie has to wonder, what part does she play in all this? Do the coincidences she's piecing together really mean—as in King Arthur's court—that tragedy is fast approaching for her new friends? Ellie doesn't know if she can do anything to stop the coming trouble. But somehow, she knows she has to try.

Not Cabot's best, but still not bad December 19, 2008 I think the idea behind this book is interesting, but unfortunately the author had an uphill battle from the start to create a story and characters that were not totally predictable. Most of us are familiar with at least the bare bones of the Arthurian legend, so many of the things that happen in this book fail to surprise. I think that if Cabot had made the characters a little more three-dimensional, than the book might have been better.
As usual, Cabot's prose crackles with the pop culture punch and casual teen-speak that we've come to expect. The book lacks the sparkle, fun, and distinct narrative voice of the Princess Diaries series, but it's still a decent addition to Cabot's extensive library of work. Parts of it did feel a little self-conscious--Cabot's frequent lamentations about the fate of "gangly brunettes" who crack jokes felt a little forced, as if she was trying too hard to make the character appear more approachable. Meanwhile, the narrator's dialogue falls short of the whip-smart female protagonists one can normally find with Cabot.
Still, this book is a good light read, though it did sometimes try my patience. A few of the dramatic scenes weren't so dramatic (see above) but it was interesting to see how Cabot interprets and modernizes these characters and this myth. I mean, you've got King Arthur and teen angst--two great tastes that taste great together.
strong teenage retelling of Arthurian legend from a talented author November 26, 2008 Elaine (named after the Lady of Shallot by her Arthurian scholar parents) is new to Avalon High, but already she finds herself suffering a crush on the star of the school, Will. But Will is dating Jennifer, and Elaine discovers there is something going on between Jennifer and Will's best friend Lance. Will is also dealing with his ogre of a father. Sound familiar? This is a fairly clever, teenage retelling and reworking (and, according to itself, continuation) of Arthurian legend. It's not as predictable as you might think, too. And the images (Elaine's penchant for floating in pools) and references are quite well done. Grade: B
Angieville: AVALON HIGH November 6, 2008 Meg Cabot does Camelot. King Arthur reincarnated as quarterback of the high school football team. What else is there to say? I think it's my favorite of her non-Princess Diaries books. Longer and denser than usual, with all those familiar characters. And, in the end, after you're sure you've pegged every one of them, Ellie turns out not to be the Lily Maid at all, but another more mysterious and oft overlooked member of the legendary cast. Though the two are vastly different, it would be fun to pair Avalon High with Lisa Ann Sandell's Song Of The Sparrow in a discussion of contemporary revisionist approaches to Arthurian lore.
AMAZING September 28, 2008 This book was AWESOME. It was full of surprises and amazing plots. It was extremely awesome, and the end was so exciting and brilliant. Sooo cool.
King Arthur Meets American High School September 21, 2008 The book Avalon High is what I like to refer to as "brain candy." Chocolate for the grey matter.
I like Meg Cabot and still read her. I read her when I was a kid, I read her now. Get over it. I still love her, will always love her.
This Cabot book in particular is based on the legends of Arthur and the belief that Arthur will someday come back and lead the world out of the Dark Ages. Elaine Harrison, named by her professor parents for Elaine who drowned herself in the legends, finds herself in a new city the year her parents take a sabbatical. Things take a decisively Arthurian turn.
Unlike Elaine's namesake she finds herself falling, not for Lance, the jock, but for A. Will Wagner, the one fated to die by his half-brother's hand. The setting, high school, is to die for. (You thought every high school movie imaginable had been made? Think again. This is one waiting to happen.)
Five high school kids, reincarnated from various legendary figures, and knowing nothing about their own power, bump and scrape their way to the fateful end. Elle, Will, Lance, and Jennifer fight against the forces of Dark, and the results, however predictable, left a smile on my face and little butterflies in my stomach. I love Meg Cabot and I love Arthurian legends. Put the two together and you get a happy girl, curled up and reading a small, sweet YA novel.
