The First and Only Scientifically Determined Enneagram Personality Test and Guide. A centuries–old psychological system with roots in sacred tradition, the Enneagram can be an invaluable guide in your journey toward self–understanding and self–development. In this book, Stanford University Medical School clinical professor of psychiatry David Daniels and counselling psychologist Virginia Price offer the only scientifically developed Enneagram test based upon extensive, time–tested research. 5 out of 5 stars The Essential Enneagram   June 7, 2008
Many books have been written about the Enneagram, but this one, from old pro David Daniels (Emeritus Professor at Stanford) and his colleague Virginia Price, stands out. It's meant to help you, the novice, understand how this personality typing system works and, even better, take you through a self-typing exercise so you can begin to understand yourself better. Following that, Daniels & Price provide lots of insightful information about Enneagram types, self mastery, and personal growth, for both novice and expert alike. This book should be in everyone's self-help library!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and to the point   October 18, 2007
The Essential Enneagram is a great book to start the journey to understanding oneself and others. A quick read, it will make you think differently and open you up to a new journey of self discovery. Once you have completed the book, you will look at yourself and others differently and have a new conversation with people. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Start or Addition to Your Enneagram Library   September 16, 2006

Once you pop, you can't stop. This book is wonderful, and written by some very intuitive folks. However, this book does have one downside:

It is only a start!

Please be aware that this book does little more than give you a brief synopsis of the enneagram types and a simple way to self-diagnose your type, as well as a few exercises to work with once you know your type. There is so much more to the enneagram, and if you are truly interested you should go to a workshop or buy a more thorough book.

I use this book like a cliff's notes for the enneagram because it is small and simple. However, it is by no means complete. So use it to supplement your library or get an overview, but by all means don't stop here.

Hands down, this is a 5 out of 5 stars. Buy this book today and then impress your friends on the train while you reveal their most deeply held beliefs in a non-chalant sweep of lyrical genius.

5 out of 5 stars Most accurate Enneagram typing system out there   October 3, 2005

I am an executive coach and I work with the Enneagram extensively with my clients. This book has by far the most accurate and reliable self-typing system available, and it's also very fast.

After the typing, Daniels goes deep quickly, summarizing the world views and distortions of each type very succinctly. This can be a bit abrupt for those who are new to the Enneagram or self-work. So I tend to encourage new clients to work with other materials until they have a fuller understanding of the model and emotional readiness for the "bright light" of Daniel's inspection of the types.

This book is one of the top 3 staples in my Enneagram library.

4 out of 5 stars Oh no! I'm an unhealthy artist! I'm going to kill myself!!   October 22, 2004

I stumbled upon this "enchanted and mythological" book at my local bookstore after delving deep into the heart of enneagram studies. Enneagram studies consist of nine types that all coincide within us, but one of the personalities is dominant over all others. Ms. Mccoy on this review page reiterates an interesting point; one she could have tried to more accurately discuss: We can label ourselves by looking at the "typing" of this obvious and blatant info, and the labeling process we do to ourselves can impede our process in life. If for example someone discovers that he or she is an artist, (an artist being one that has trouble feeling and is most likely slow at doing things as it is portrayed in the book)this person might use that label as an excuse to why he or she can't get a job or uses this as a reason to act out. However, just like justice, hatred, caring, or FREEDOM, everyone has a different response to the world in which they live, and I don't feel that this book reveals too much beyond what a person does not already know about him or herself. If ANYTHING - this book is to be used as an indicator, a direction, and most of all, an understanding of everyone else and their secret desires/impulses. Media is a double-edged sword, it can help you or hurt you. Ms. Mccoy's response to this book is one of a person who doesn't want to be labeled, and I can respect that, however; the enneagram gives way to the fact that there are labels in this society - ones we normally use everyday AND not with such discriminatory purposes. Such as she/he. Black/white. Good/Bad. Labeling is built into our heads, its the way we see the world. So it all comes down to asking yourself if its ok to discern differences within people or not. If not, I'd avoid this book----(...)
