Product Description
The new installment in Stella Rimington’s series of “frighteningly authentic” espionage thrillers (Chicago Tribune) featuring the fiercely intelligent, ambitious MI5 officer Liz Carlyle.
Liz has been transferred to counter-espionage—the hub of MI5 operations during the Cold War, which has been scaled back as anti-terrorism has gained priority. But there’s plenty for her to do: there are more spies operating in London in the twenty-first century than there were during the height of East-West hostilities. Even the Russians still have a large contingent, although now they spy on the international financial community and on the wealthy ex-pat oligarchs who make England their domain.
In her new assignment, Liz quickly uncovers a plot to silence one of these Russians: Nikita Brunovsky, an increasingly vocal opponent of Vladimir Putin. The Foreign Office is adamant about forestalling a crime that could become a full-blown international incident, but there’s not a single clue as to how the assassination will be carried out—and Liz is solely responsible for averting disaster. So she goes undercover, attaching herself to Brunovsky’s retinue: racing against the clock to determine who betrayed him and suddenly facing a wholly unexpected second task—unmasking a Russian operative working undercover alongside her.
Dame Stella has once again distilled her experience as the first woman Director General of MI5 into a spy novel of arresting psychological complexity and unflagging suspense.

A page ripper October 5, 2008 I saved this for when I went on a cruise, and was not disappointed. Her characters have depth, are not perfect, and are not experts at every aspect of spycraft. Her novels remind me of the Frederick Forsythe thrillers, such as "The Fourth Protocol." That is, they really make me want to read them, having pulled me in. I can't call it a page turner as that's not fast enough. It's more that I want to rip through it, so I call it a page ripper.
moving up October 2, 2008 Rimmington tells a great story every time and her characterizations improve here. On the procedural side - sort of beauracracy noir - but a very good read that is full of scary credible details.
Russian Conspiracy October 1, 2008 The KGB lives on, no matter how the initials change. In this second impelling espionage thriller by the author, former head of Britain's MI-5, we find Liz Carlyle in a bit of a muddle as she is assigned to an undercover role as an "art student" in the household of a Russian billionaire in London. It appears "intelligence" has picked up information of a Russian plot to assassinate a Russian oligarch in the British Isles, which could produce a severe international incident.
Liz has been transferred to counter-espionage. While it was the hub of activity during the Cold War, major MI-5 emphasis is now on counter-terrorism despite the fact that there are probably more Russian spies in London than during the height of East-West hostilities. Now, however, they seem to spy on numerous Russian oligarchs intent on enjoying themselves and spending their money ostentatiously.
In this fine-tuned thriller, the clues are numerous, but misdirections more plentiful. Tersely written, the plot moves forward to a dangerous but satisfying end. Liz is an appealing character, which is more than one can say for some of her co-workers. Recommended.

As a former spy, Stella did a great job on this novel. A good read.
I'm sure glad I discovered this writer September 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I still need to read her first book in this series and also her autobiography. However, she's certainly carving a niche for herself and I noticed that she's even obliquely referred to by another outstanding lady author, P.D. James, in her recent book, THE LIGHTHOUSE.I found ILLEGAL ACTION even more engrossing than SECRET ASSET which I previously read. I suspect familiarity with the continuing characters helped and so one probably should start their reading of this author with her first book, AT RISK.However, this is an outstanding espionage/mystery on its own. Again, there's the sheer authenticity and feeling that all this could actually be happening. I did appreciate the added mystery puzzle and suspense in this. Liz Carlyle goes undercover in this one and so the added suspense is a key factor in reading the book. The background of today's Russia is also much of a plus. The mystery element is another important factor here. One part of the puzzle, that of identifying a mysterious character, is reaqsonably easy, but the bigger picture is more difficult to foresee than it was in the previous Liz Carlyle novel I've read. I haven't really detailed the plot, but have given the key elements which are well detasiled on the book's flyleafs. The strength of this series is in the characterization and the authenticity. Highly recommended, but do try to read the earlier two books first for maximum enjoyment of this one.
