5 out of 5 stars Extremely well written & a must read for anyone looking for the most effective defensive & offensive techniques   September 22, 2008

Krav Maga to me is probably the most efficient & effective martial art to ward off attackers, whether it is to just restrain an aggressor or to do some real damage to someone who may be trying to take your life or the life of your loved ones. This book breaks it down to the nuts & bolts and helped me build a solid foundation that helped in my process & growth as a student of Krav Maga. I originally come from a Praying Mantis Kung Fu background & was completely impressed by how simple it was to understand a martial art that was new to me. The diagrams are great & quite detailed & I actually read the book twice so that the concepts were well ingrained into my mind & muscle memory. David Kahn is a great teacher just through this book alone & since I live in NY, if it's possible, I will seriously look into making the trek out to his school in New Jersey to continue my training. A definite must read for MMA folks & for people of all sizes & ages.

5 out of 5 stars Intro to Krav Maga   August 6, 2008

As a personal trainer I have tried just about every kind of workout you can imagine. The twelve week workout offered in the back of the book makes for a terrific exercise, while also teaching one the basics of hand to hand Krav Maga. I am also a student of mixed martial arts and these techniques have helped me to feel much more confident in my fighting skills. The philosophy and origins of Krav Maga are also explained in detail, helping one to better appreciate the combat system. I was very pleased with the book as an introduction to Krav Maga.

1 out of 5 stars This is a near worthless book IF you are an experienced martial artist -- even a yellow belt   July 29, 2008

This book might have some value for those who have never attended a single class in any martial art.*

There are much better books on the basics of punching and kicking however.

View it online and review the Table of Contents -- the first four chapters or more are history, philosophy, why the author likes Krav etc. This information can be summarized in a few pages or found free on the Internet.

The next few chapters are literally how to perform each simple strike or kick -- good enough, but hardly the specific to Krav. I could even find examples (might have missed the tree for the forest) the explanation of an Block/Attack at the same time -- an essential of Krav.

* For a raw beginner it might be a 2 or 2 1/2 stars, but:

Save your money, buy a better "self-defense" or "intro to martial arts" book if you are a beginner -- buy a "real Krav" book if you are experienced and want to really learn Krav.

I am extremely glad that I read this in the book store (I am a speed reader), rather than paying money for it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice overview   July 8, 2008
I've been doing Krav for about 3 months. This book is a nice overview but it cannot compare to a real class. If you've never tried Krav, I would recommend this book as an introduction. If you've already tried Krav, you won't learn much from this book.
