Amazon.com Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm
Product Description The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.
Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.
Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.
Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Another amaing Stephenie Meyer book May 16, 2008 First of all, I must say that I LOVE Stephenie Meyer's books. I am 30 years old with 5 kids and I can't get enough of them. I have a slight depression now that i've read the last book she has out right now and i have to wait to August for another. She is an amazing writer. They are all such easy reads, even with kids and distractions around you. I had extremely high hopes for The Host given that I adored the twilight books as much as i did. It really lived up to my expectations. It was captivating and thought provoking. The love stories in her books makes your stomach flutter with butterflies. You end up loving the characters of the book. If you are thinking about getting this book then for sure GET IT. You will not be disapointed. Beautiful book, beautiful author, great story. I loved it as i do all her books.
I wanted to love it May 15, 2008 I was so excited to get read this book. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. It was so slow in the beginning. I kept reading because it is Stephenie Meyer after all. Nothing really ever happened. The bad guys weren't bad. The raids weren't eventful. The love story was lame. I never cared about the main character. I loved the Twilight series and have already pre-ordered Breaking Dawn. I just don't think that this book was her best.
Good book! May 15, 2008 I love Stephenie's imagination and her characters are lovable. I read the book in a day and a half. I REALLY liked the book, but was not obsessed with it like I was with twilight or eclipse. I do have some points in which I have minor complaints. 1) the past lives planets that she describes seem cheesy and unrealistic to me. 2) the start of the book was really slow (but worth reading). 3)I would have liked to see more conflict from the seekers then was written into the story. Other than that I would recommend this book to teens and adults alike and I plan on keeping it as part of my book collection.
I got carpole tunnel because I couldn't put it down May 15, 2008 I couldn't put it down. This 6oo page book was so heavy my hands would go numb forcing me to put it down. That was the only reason I'd put it down and take a break. The story had me so captivated to the very end. It's scifi but PG rated scifi not like alot of other scfi books out there that are R or worse. I loved it!
A different sort of read, but riveting nonetheless May 15, 2008 I was almost reluctant to pick up The Host. A body with two minds? A love triangle with just two people? It all sounded too weird for my tastes. But even though I don't see myself re-reading it again, at least not in the near future, it was still an interesting and worthwhile read. It wasn't quite what I expected. I don't really know what I was expecting, though... It's not really that comparable to the Twilight series. The only thing that is similar is Ms. Meyer's awesome talent for expressing and conveying such depth of emotions and the strong connections that can develop between unlikely people. Plus the characters are still so well depicted that they feel real.
Luckily, there wasn't much focus on the science fiction aspect turn me off completely. Though, the aliens/body snatchers are central to the story, they are not that threatening or overwhelming an addition to the story to make it feel different than a normal story with normal characters. The only time there was too much fantasy going on was when Wanderer was telling stories of the other planets she lived on. At first this was very interesting but then it got to be too much- too random, too weird. Even with that chunk, the story makes for a fascinating read. Wanderer (aka Wanda) is definitely a very unique narrator and heroine. At first it is easy to side with Melanie, and hate Wanderer for the invader/body snatcher that she is. But just Melanie comes to know and appreciate the more human and likeable aspects of her personality, the readers are also better able to like and even relate to some of what she's going through.
Wanderer is an alien soul, an outsider. Her emotional journey is riveting. She is able to come to love and understand Melanie, who other souls had deemed a resistant/aggressive host. She is able to integrate herself with humans and come to understand their struggle. She is in many ways a diplomat between the souls and the humans. Her story is bittersweet, touching and compelling. Despite the fact that the book could've been cut down quite a bit, it is still a whirlwind of a read. This book will definitely make you think; and it will stick with you long after you finish. It's definitely a different sort of read, but enjoyable nonetheless. Fans of Twilight may be a little disappointed because The Host is not as powerful or as wildly addicting. It takes longer for you to get into it but the characters are just as strong as the Twilight gang for you to root for them and want to see how it wraps up. Though, this book is aimed for adults, other than some passionate kissing this is definitely young adult friendly.
