| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description In The Name of Hate is the first book to offer a comprehensive theory of hate crimes, arguing for an expansion of the legal definitions that most states in the U.S. hold. Barbara Perry provides an historical understanding of hate crimes and provocatively argues that hate crimes are not an aberration of current society, but rather a by-product of a society still grappling with inequality, difference, fear, and hate.

Finally, a theoretical analysis of hate crime March 4, 2003 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Perry analyzes hate crime through a variety of lenses and ends up framing it brilliantly. As a student of hate crime I am thankful for her thorough portrayal of hate crime as not ABNORMAL but as a hyper-extension of a sexist, racist, homophobic society. She synthesizes what many authors have said. She critiques them thoroughly as well. Excellent job!
Pleasant step into reality December 12, 2002 Dr. Perry's book is an innovative step into the realistic realm that lies beneath media hype about hate crimes. Dr. Perry is both raw and thorough. Very enjoyable read.
Good to have July 2, 2002 I am a grad student in psychology doing a thesis on gay/lesbian hate crimes. This volume is moving and insightful. All in all a good read with good info.

Perry does a wonderful job of incorporating James Messerschmidt's theory of crime as "doing gender" to hate crimes, seeing them as "doing difference". Especially useful is her analysis of gay-bashing. ...
