Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The key to eternal life has been found beneath two thousand feet of icy water in an area known as the "Lost City." To a family of ruthless French arms dealers the Lost City is the key to world domination. To Kurt Austin, leader of NUMA's Special Assignments Team, and his colleague Joe Zavala, it may be their greatest-and deadliest-challenge of all.

4 out of 5 stars My first Cussler novel, but not my last....   September 23, 2008
This is the first Clive Cussler novel that I have read, and it will not be my last. Until reading this book, I only knew Cussler's work from skimming the best sellers at the book store and from the movie "Sahara".

I thought the book was for the most part well written, though I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that the story and supporting subplots seemed to jump around a bit toward the end. Even with this criticism, the storyline held my attention, and there were a couple of nights that did not want to put it down.

If you are looking for action, adventure, mystery, and a little sci-fi, then "Lost City" may be a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Movie Making Material!   August 28, 2008
Clive Cussler along with Paul Kemprecos has done it again. Another story from "The NUMA Files" and it is filled with suspense and adventures along with a few other surprises as only Cussler can do.

Admittedly a Cussler fan, I was a bit disappointed when he started teaming up with other authors. Little did I know at the time is that the teams produce stories nearly as good as Cussler himself. The advantage - more Cussler stories.

"Lost City" features Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala, the two main characters in all "The NUMA Files" stories. This one has it all from suspense to adventure plus exotic locations around the world and even monsters. This story is definitely movie making material.

If you enjoy Clive Cussler's style of writing, the "Lost City" is for you. I still enjoy the Dirt Pitt adventures the best but this is highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars All Action Thriller   June 17, 2008
As with all Clive Cussler novels that I have read, the plot very far fetched, and the heros/heroines seem to have more lives than a cat!

This prologue of the book starts with a air battle in September 1914, where one of the carachters is in a plane with a synchronising mechanism that allows the machine gun to fire through the propeller. This mechanism was not if fact invented until the Spring of 1915.

However, from the start, the book did grab my attention. The action swings from Paris to rural France, Scotland, and a number of underwater locations, and there is rarely a dull moment.

The different nationalities, that the various main characters come across on their adventures are however, very stereotypical. This is a common trait I find in this author's books.

Overall, though, the book is pure escapism, should keep your attention (if you can get over the far-fetched pieces) and is ideal for a holiday read. If you have not read any of Clive Cussler's other books, I would recommend Sahara or Dragon, ahead of this one.

2 out of 5 stars Not all that interesting.   March 30, 2008
I couldn't get into this book at all. The story wasn't very exciting and it just wasn't written as well as the Dirt Pitt series. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone but a die-hard Cussler fan.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting plot, but poor characterization   October 19, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

The best thing I can say is that the plot was somewhat interesting. The characterization of the people was awful and very unrealistic and their actions just don't seem to reflect reality. I mean, you're held prisoner and just about killed and barely escape with your life, but instead of alerting any of the authorities, or anyone else, you plan a romantic dinner instead? The characters are very shallow and all the good guys portrayed as perfect (i.e the girls are constantly described as beautiful and the men as handsome, and no one has a single fault or blemish, and whatever they do they are perfectly skilled at). And of course everyone the characters talk to has heard of the fame of Kurt Austin and NUMA.

Another reviewer of a Clive Cussler book has said it best "Dialogue is completely pompous; everyone talks to each other in a very formal way, almost like they're in a Shakespeare play. The characters are all superlative in their abilities and have no flaws or idiosyncrasies. This whole thing is just loaded with cliches and hackneyed descriptions."

I would recommend reading something by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs instead - you won't be disappointed.
