An Entertaining Departure From The Prey Series January 5, 2009 While I really enjoy Sandford's "Prey" series of novels, I found this a very good departure from the norm. It's a very good Washington political thriller with completely believable characters. One can form an image of the characters very easily. Even the hero & heroine aren't "over the top" as in many novels; which is a relief. The story unfolds nicely & is very entertaining. It comes to a very good conclusion. Though, I could have done without the last two pages. None of that "riding off into the sunset" stuff is needed
Dead Watch is worth a look December 8, 2008 No Lucas Davenport. No Virgil Flowers. No problem. As a fan of Sandford's series featuring Davenport and Flowers, I wasn't sure what to expect with this standalone work. Thankfully, I was not disappointed. Dead Watch was a fast-paced political thriller that kept me turning the pages. Sandford presents a whodunit story with a plethora of suspects and an abundance of political infighting. Having just endured the realities of another election cycle, it was actually nice to retreat into some good political fiction. Pick this up. Dead Watch is definitely worth a look.
Hope to see more of Jacob Winter! June 27, 2008 This is John Sandford's first foray into political thrillers, and it's thoroughly enjoyable; it has all of the intriguing, realistic touches of Sandford's other work. "Dead Watch" introduces a fascinating new character, Jacob Winter, who is a specialist in "forensic bureaucracy."
This novel isn't as dense or complex as a typical Baldacci or Meltzer novel, but Sandford's plot is a little more plausible and believable that what those guys usually produce. I also appreciated that the storyline takes Winter outside the D.C. area and into the Midwest (an acknowledgement that politically important things do happen in "flyover country").
Sandford actually had me wishing that Jacob Winter's book, "Winter's Guide to the Inside," was real!
Pretty Good Political Thriller June 19, 2008 Former U.S. Senator, Lincoln Bowe gone missing. he was last seen getting into a car with three men. Then his body shows up, days later, tied to a tree, and missing its head. Why was he killed, and who was behind it?
Former Army Intelligence officer, Jake Winter, is called in by the President's Chief of Staff, to find out what really happened.
I felt this book was fairly well paced, with a solid enough cast of characters. There is a few twists on the way, as we learn more about the dead Senator's personal life, and about his friends and enemies, as Jake Winter delves further into his investagation. Overall, a fairly good read.
It blew me away! May 25, 2008 This was my first John Sandford novel and it was fantastic! I was not at all disappointed! I plan on reading everything he has written and continue as long as he keeps writing!
