Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When Jesus ""made himself nothing...taking the nature of a servant,"" He modeled for all believers true humility. Andrew Murray calls this ""our true nobility"" and ""the distinguishing feature of discipleship."" With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written, this edition has been edited for today's reader.

3 out of 5 stars A Rootl Grace   November 7, 2008
I am certain that Andrew Murray's books can be read with great benefit(and 'Humility' is one of his finest books)but some discernment is necessary because there are some erroneous views on sanctification in his writings. While there is a mystical element to the Christian life,I think Mr.Murray is overly mystical in some of his beliefs.
Though some caution and discernment are needed when reading Murray the benefits far outweigh the dangers in my judgement. There is an undeniable devotion to God and many nuggets of spiritual treasure throughout what he has written on the important grace of humility.
The authors definition is outstanding:"Humility is the place of entire dependence on God" and is the root of every virtue.Equally important is his observation that pride (the absence of or loss of humility)is the root of every sin and evil.
Murray understood and emphasizes that as humility was a distinguishing feature of the Lord Jesus,so it should be of His followers.Babes in Christ are often ignorant of this but those who have walked with the Lord for a time should not be.
Andrew Murray believed that a level of sanctification was possible(that from a Biblical standpoint)in this life is unattainable(though Christians should and must strive to be holy and blameless). He writes "the new nature in its divine humility be revealed in power to take the place of the old".The new nature and the principle of indwelling sin are something the believer will have struggles with(there will be constant warfare)until the day they die.The principle of indwelling sin(and the sruggles that Christians have with it)are never eradicated in this life, though Mr.Murray seemed to believe this was possible.
That is why the Bible exhorts Christians 'to mortify the deeds of the flesh','to make no provision for sin'and to 'set their minds on the things above'(this is a part of the continual warfare that the saints are engaged in).The apostle Paul describes this struggle and warfare in Romans Chapter 7:19 'for the good that I would I do not:but the evil which I would not, that I do'.The apostle is here presenting (throughout chapter 7 of Romans)the battle that all Christians experience when they are seeking to live for God(they must deal with the principle of remaining sin, though sins enslaving power is broken at conversion its presence remains until death). When God's people trust in Him for strength to overcome they experience many victories but there are often failures(which under God's blessing will help to work humility in them).
The author writes about submission to and dependence on the Father's wiil and on p.29 he makes this statement(speaking of Christ)"God honoured his trust and did all for him".Murray in exhorting Christians to do the same(entire self abnegation and absoulute submission to the Fathers will) and then the Father will do all for them. The author is correct that God's people should entirely submit to the Father(and there will frequently be times of wholehearted submission but this will be interrupted with times when self will prevails). When saints wholly submit to God it is not correct or Biblical to say God does everything for them but rather that they overcome sin and temptation through God's enabling power.I believe Mr.Murray embibed the unbiblical teaching of 'Let go and let God'.The Scritures clearly teach believers to 'Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do His good pleasure'.God doesn't do it for you(fight sin and temptation)but when you rely on His strength and power He works in you to accomplish His will and enables you to do that which you could not in your own strength.
Here is another quote to provide further evidence of the great value of this work "It is the humility that brings a soul to be nothing before God,that also removes every hindrance to faith, and makes it only fear lest it should dishonour Him by not trusting Him wholly."
Though Murray's thinking in some areas of sanctification is off ,this is still one of the best books on this Biblical grace and can be read with great profit to one's soul.

A great resource for those seeking the character of Christ through humility. This book has encouraged me all the more to desire humility in the face of Christ.

5 out of 5 stars All other books I have read after refer me to this book!   June 21, 2008
Agree possibly the best book ever written on the subject, deep, slow read so much you must hit the breaks, should be a must read, old English but so powerful, get it if you are wanting to go deep.

5 out of 5 stars I Never Understood Humility Until Now   April 24, 2008

I have read about humility in books, including the bible for over twenty years. I have searched for what it means to be a humble person, as I always interpreted it as being a doormat. Andrew Murray talks about humility using the life of Christ as our perfect example in such a simple way. I can now apply these very simple principles to my everyday life and I feel free.

I also love and appreciate that this is a small, very simple book. Andrew Murray gets to the heart of the matter without throwing in a lot of extra words.

After reading this book I bought five more copies. As God puts a person on my heart, I give them a copy of this book. this book is a wonderful spiritual journey.
