Product Description

Jane Green’s rise to reigning queen of commercial women’s literature has been positively meteoric. Jemima J, Mr. Maybe, and Bookends all took international bestseller lists by storm—and went on to knockout paperback success (Jemima J has 390,000 copies in print)—thanks to Jane’s fresh perspective on dating and marriage. Now she applies her golden touch to the next phase in a woman’s life, in an insightful, bighearted tale of three friends grappling with their biological clocks.

Convinced that a baby will spice up her lackluster relationship with an apathetic boyfriend, Julia launches into a frenetic round of doctor’s appointments and fertility rituals that threatens to send her over the edge. Samantha, happily married and confident that she’s the next June Cleaver, is appalled to find that her little bundle of joy leaves her exhausted, overweight, and ogling a girlfriend’s hottie husband. Meanwhile, glamorous Maeve knows she’s allergic to rugrats—until a steamy one-night stand leaves her with more than one surprise. As the three heroines confront their maternity dilemmas, each one discovers a long-lost part of herself and stumbles toward her own unexpected happy ending.

In Jane’s trademark luminous and compassionate prose, Babyville beautifully tackles that rite of passage that crosses every woman’s mind at least once—whether it takes her breath away or knocks the wind right out of her: having a baby.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and Silly!   October 2, 2008
I managed to read the Julia segment...I plodded through a bit of Meave, then all I wanted to do was read Julia's reaction to Meave's pregnancy.. and just scanned the remaining pages looking for that. Very boring and silly book!

4 out of 5 stars Cute   September 17, 2008
Babyville was such a cute book that just about any girl can relate to. It's through the point of view of three women who all have very different views of having children.

The first is Julie, who is desperate to have a baby. She is in a very unhappy relationship and thinks a baby will seal the cracks, although she seems to making things worse. After a very desperate attempt to get pregnant, she decides to spend some time away in New York. Mauve is the woman who takes over Julie's position at work. She's wild and career-driven and not ready for children. She happens to get a very quick surprise that changes the focus of her life. Sam is Julie's best friend and soon becomes close with Mauve. She has a young baby and her world seems to be different afterwards. It's an adorable story and I think everyone knows someone like a character from this book!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining read   July 30, 2008
I think most of the people writing reviews take themselves too seriously. This book was entertaining, it kept me interested in the characters and the storyline. These are the expectations I had for the book so I was not disappointed. It hit on some different aspects of pregnancy, the frustration before it happens, the panic knowing you will be in charge of someone elses life, and finally the aftermath, knowing you can love someone completely, but still need time and energy for yourself. Overall, I enjoyed it, there are good moments in the book that will change your perspective, just don't expect it to change your life. As a mother of 3, I was able to identify with several of the characters. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Good...but one part ruined the whole book.   July 20, 2008
Was anyone else totally dissapointed when Julia basically didnt even care that Mark was living with his new pregnant girlfriend who stole Julias job? I was so bummed, I totally wanted (and expected) that when Julia found out about it, it would be a huge dramatic scene! I thought for sure with the way Jane Green was leading you on that Julia was going to one day show up at her old house with Mark and catch Maeve there preganant.

When Julia found out ...the only thing it says is that she had been crying a lot about it. NOOO...not good enough. Very weak in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Babyville   February 14, 2008
The book started off slow, but turned out to be great. The chaptered point of views was a really interesting aspect of this book. I loved how all the characters intertwined.
