Immense Value For Windows Users January 26, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Many people started using personal computers after Windows had replaced DOS and as such are only familiar with Graphical User Interface and drag and drop features. But when the GUI fails, and command line action is required, they are completely lost. This book is an excellent manual and reference on DOS. It provides a history of DOS and its underlying concepts to the degree of informing and not inundating the user. The explanation of different commands includes the DOS version and the function of the related switches. A chapter is devoted to batch files, which is of interest in writing scripts. Other sections describe DOS components such as command.com and autoexec.bat, 8.3 file naming convention and many other useful topics. Understanding of DOS is crucial to anyone seeking to configure and troubleshoot any version of Windows. A saying goes: "DOS is dead", but when Windows fails, it is DOS (Windows command line) that will save the day!
absolutley awesome and indepth book on DOS! October 17, 2001 To be blunt ive read many books on DOS since ,well since DOS has been around. The author of this book is awesome and clear and precise in the way he explores the world of DOS and the Operating System itself. Thanx amazon.
Still crazy after all these years... March 30, 2001 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
With most new systems shipped with Win2K or ME, some people question whether knowledge of MS-DOS is still a viable, marketable skill. It could very well be, if you're one of these people:A hot-shot network admin whose first job duties are to compose login scripts and set up a NetWare server; A power gamer trying to get old favorites to run on a new box; A beginning programmer wondering why their code works on their machine, but won't run correctly or even install on other PCs; A clueless new user who has done something horribly wrong, recoiling in terror because there's nothing but a "C" on the screen AND THE MOUSE DOESN'T WORK! If you're one of these people - that is, if you own a PC - you will eventually have to come to terms with the DOS command line. There is no finer book in print than this one to prepare you for that task - no others are needed, no others come close.
DOS: Still critical after all these years March 27, 2001 @ECHO OFF:: CALL SYNTAX1 = mak_TodayDate.BAT :: CALL SYNTAX2 = mak_To~1.BAT :: CREATES TODAY.DAT USING THE CURRENT SYSTEM DATE VALUE :: DATE FORMAT: ccyymmdd DATE /T >TODAY.DAT FOR /F "TOKENS=2,3,4 DELIMS=/ " %%D IN (TODAY.DAT) DO ECHO %%F%% D%%E>TODAY.DAT :: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * DOS does more these days, and under Windows-NT there are a number of great command line tricks that make DOS more like Unix or Linux. Useful with WSH and other command-line utilities that most users never access or call. While DOS is not a "systems programming" language, learning the command syntax can make for some powerful and useful O/S level process control and management. Other flashier languages and O/S's get more attention; Linux, Unix, etc. have made inroads, but they're still minor players when it comes to anything but "nerd's toys and geek's games". DOS is still the core O/S in most laptops, and on most desktops. With Windows-2000 (and newer DOS versions) now available, a new, updated DOS reference text is needed.
