| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description This is a revised edition of this vocabulary for young children and reluctant readers, and is designed to develop first reading and spelling skills. It contains a full alphabetic index and is highly illustrated throughout the text. Words and phrases are brought up-to-date - roller blades, computers and duvets make an appearance - and new concepts are introduced. Other titles in the same series are "First Thousand Words in French", "First Thousand Words in German" and "First Thousand Words in Spanish".

Inspired my son to love books January 11, 2008 I love this book, and so does my oldest son! He has always hated storytime and reading, preferring to do more active things. But when I bought this book and showed it to him, the illustrations captured him and he actually sat still and looked at it for awhile. Then when I showed him that he could find the hidden ducky on each page, his interest grew exponentially! He was 3 years old when I first brought it home, and at nearly 6 years old now, he still preferes this book to all our others. But, the difference is that now, he loves other books too!
Great first 'GB' English book...but if you are an AMERICAN... read on... June 20, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I recently bought this book (and also the first 1000 Words in German) for our daughter. The book is very good, but American parents may need to make some changes in order to speak the same "language" that your child is learning. There are around 100 absolutely BRITISH words in the book where you might need to also write the American English word, so that your child learns both. (For example Lorry, Sticking Plaster, Petrol, Pram, Push-Chair to name a few...are not used in America.) Otherwise it is a great book.
Great pictures, my 2-year-old loves this book! February 23, 2007 This looks set to be a book that will have quite a few years' use in our household - and right now my youg daughter is loving the discovery of familiar (and unfamiliar) objects in the incredibly detailed and busy pictures. It's amazing how the artist manages to create so many little scenes and activities within each big picture, which create a talking point and a chance to invent stories around what you can see in the pictures. Much more than just a word book.
Every child should have one January 19, 2007 A fantastic learning aid for young children. This book encourages young ones to spell words enabling them to write their own stories by looking for pictures of items with their attached name and then learning how to spell the word. We bought the English and French edition so our little one is learning how to spell in both languages. Fantastic book.
Worst sticker book. December 29, 2006 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Don't buy this book. You need to be a surgeon to be able to remove the stickers from the sticker pages. You then have to search endlessly with your child to find the proper location for it. There are many other more enjoyable options that do not provide as much frustration as this product...
