The book was a little slanted toward the "modern" muzzleloader crowd. While I am less interested in this, I can understand why this would be a hot topic to many hunters. The person who co-authored this book, Tony Knight, is credited with starting this phenomenon in the 1980s.

This is great introduction and I would highly recommend it for someone interested in the sport. It will certainly serve as a jumping off point for further study. For some, however, it may be the only book you need on the topic.

To begin with, this is a very elegant looking book, it is definatly worthy of a cofee table or other such display. It is a hardback and it contains many beautifull photographs of black powder rifles from modern in-lines to the first matchlock rifles. The book is also very informative. The author discusses and explains flintlock, percusion, and in-line muzzleloading rifles. Besides rifles he also includes blackpowder shotguns and pistols. The book has a chapter concerning the pros and cons of the differant types of projectiles and which is best for certain types of firearms. The author explains many differant accesories one needs and also how to use them. He explains how to safely load and fire a muzzleloader, how to clean it, and how to find an effective load. The author also covers hunting deer and other big game with frontloaders. There is even a section on how to select and build your own black powder rifle from a kit. Myself, being a newcomer to muzzleloading, find this book very clear and informative. It has definatly intrested me in pursuing muzzleloading and perhaps even building my own gun.
