1 out of 5 stars Not for benchrest   August 11, 2008
This is a book for hunters. The cover is misleading.
Berger and scenar are not mentioned. Nor 6BR ammo.
To me it looks as if the book was written just after the Vietnam war.

5 out of 5 stars Biased, but still a good book   July 29, 2008
I gotta say, I've read this book and I can't believe how negative some of the reviews are here. This is a good book (PERIOD) If you want to know how to make your rifle really drive tacks, not hyperboly, REALLY drive tacks, then you should get this book. Personally, I liked the WHOLE book, but I can understand that anything past the first 100 pages (worth the price of the book alone) would bore some people not into the nitty-gritty of it.

It's obvious Joe D "RealGuns.Com" was looking for another reloading manual - this isn't one and doesn't claim to be. It's also not a book on shooting fundamentals as Stephan Samuel "ss-nyc" seemed to think, and the fact that he makes a statement such as, "The author subscribes to the common and overhyped notion that loading your own ammo is the only way to shoot straight." in his review,...Well, there's shooting straight, and there's shooting straight. Steven, you might be happy hitting the beer can at 100 yards, but guys like Mr. Arnold and myself want to hit the letter 'B' in the name 'Budweiser' on the can - anyone who thinks you can pick up a box of "Match Ammo" at Joe's and shoot it out of a designer rifle and drive tacks is fooling themselves. All the shooters that can REALLY shoot, reload their own ammo.

What this book can best be described as is a look over the shoulder of a very knowledgeable rifle-maker, shooter, hunter, and reloader - it's like having a professional guide through the jungle: rifle construction, ballistic basics, reloading basics, proper methodology for testing loads and tuning them into tack-drivers (I really liked this portion as it cleared up a lot of useless stuff I was doing and got me focused on what mattered: tuning my load to my rifle and how to do that systematically and expediently). It distills a lot of 'BS' into the key concepts to think about in achieving the right combination of rifle, bullet, powder & shooter to drill ragged holes in targets shot, after shot, after shot.

Simply put, his methods work and if you're new to reloading and how to go about making a fair rifle/shooter into a GREAT rifle/shooter - you need to read this book, and start reloading your own ammo. Not only will you save money on the store-bought ammo you're NOT buying, but you'll be shooting a lot better as well.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good buy   January 26, 2008
Wouldn't buy another rifle from this guy....

I surely wouldn't want to read anything he would write....

3 out of 5 stars Nothing more than a cartridge/reloading manual   December 18, 2007
This book is good but not really about what it claims it's about. The author subscribes to the common and overhyped notion that loading your own ammo is the only way to shoot straight. He spends a brief few pages on shooting form, a good section on reloading, then the rest of the book is a list of hunting cartridges.

If you're interested in a book on shooting technique, there are much better. Certainly, this is one of the most cursory and brief descriptions of reloading (try an ammo manufacturer's manual). If you're interested in honest and unbiased descriptions of cartridges, go with Cartridges of the World (11th Edition) instead.

There is a section on the author's own cartridge designs. He says himself that none of his line was picked up commercially. The book doesn't make his commercial failure any more viable.

If you have no other books on shooting and you're looking for a single book that covers shooting basics, reloading and cartridge selection, this book is a short survey. Otherwise, I'd recommend several other useful works on any subject it covers.

5 out of 5 stars From loading cartridges and ballistic tables to RPI values and locating the right cartridge for the job   July 3, 2006
5 out of 7 found this review helpful

Douglas E. Arnold's High Power Rifle Accuracy Before You Shoot comes from a firearms authority, who provides depth and details on techniques shooters need to know to get the most from a high-power rifle. From loading cartridges and ballistic tables to RPI values and locating the right cartridge for the job, High Power Rifle Accuracy is the manual that should be sold with all such rifles. It's not - so be sure it's in your library.
