Traditional BASICS...from the NRA. December 19, 2000 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
This is the student handbook for the NRA Basic Pistol Course. When a friend or relative wants to learn to shoot a handgun, I buy them this book...it lets the beginner study at home, BEFORE that 1st big day at the range. The 1st two chapters give them some confidence about how revolvers and semi-automatics work, what the different parts are called, and the most common ammunition types. The next two chapters cover safe handling and operating. Having an idea of gun safety is a big stress reducer...for both of us. All chapters have a review section. It's very well indexed with glossary.Handguns CAN be intimidating, but if you're the proverbial friend or relative who's "knowledgeable about firearms"...remember: SO CAN YOU! This book makes me a much better teacher. I find a beginner much easier to teach when they have some dignity about what they've learned so far, and, when I stick to the basics (instead of trying to remember and include everything I know), they can actually learn something! It also covers holds for different shooting positions, basic cleaning, sight picture, and how to improve. This is the book to teach or learn the basics. It's from the NRA, and it's the best.
precise instruction for every handguner March 28, 2000 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book allows both the begining and experienced shooter to understand the basics of firearm operations, correct methods of shooting and most importantly firearms safety. A very good refresher for any avid firearms user, a must read for todays enthusiast!
