Good Stuff!! September 13, 2008 The info in here is good for anyone new to the sport. I have heard that color was important with the bait, but KVD explains why they matter and how to determin what to do if something is not working. I am not done with the book yet, but what I have read is very useful. I wish I could say that using some of his tactics has helped me land a lot of fish, but it has not. I used one of the top water hints that he gives and hung a fish that broke off my 12 pound floracabon line! If you use the book, invest in good line. He may not get you more fish, but he fished for the big ones and helps you do that. I did put a trailing hook on a buzz bait from his suggestion and landed a fish with that hook. He missed the first hook!! Also tried using a spinner bait in ways that he talks about in the book. Caught my first small mouth (3 pounder) and a 2.5 pound large mouth today with his tricks with a spinner... Can't wait to finish the book, but I am trying to absourb all that I can as I go through it.
Kevin VanDam December 7, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Secrets of a Champion by Kevin VanDam is a fairly good read. What is especially beneficial is that, where many other bass books are filled with "southern" tactics and patterns, Van Dam, a Michigan native, refers to patterns, lures, etc which are helpful to "northern" anglers.Of course there still are alot of southern and western tactics, etc, at least he recognizes the "north" and this is nice for a change. His ideas depart somewhat from other anglers in being more modern in their approach. They must work as a brief glance at his record shows that he is very successful on tour. The only complaint would be that the book is to short and is a little soft on equipment selection, although these are covered better in his other book.
Must Have Books August 10, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you don't have these books your not catching all the fish you should. This guy knows how to catch fish and lets you in on all of his secrets. Must have book if you are serious about bass fishing.
Great Book May 17, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a great book if you want to get more bass in your boat. This is written by one of the greatest anglers of all time Kevin VanDam. I would strongly recomend this book. The first time I went out after reading this book I was able to catch more fish. Everything you need to know from tuning lures to selecting the right equipment is in this book. One of the best books out there.
