Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The aftermath of the Civil War saw the Ku Klux Klan founded as a white supremacist insurgency of former Confederate rebels. But the Klan saw its greatest growth in the first decades of the 20th century. By 1925, with a membership of about four million, it was established in every state of the Union. Fueling its incredible growth was a potent combination of public relations expertise and high-pressure sales tactics applied to the business of hate. Its sinister legacy still confronts us today. Collected here for the first time is a massive dossier of original source material documenting this bizarre episode of American history. Materials include government reports; long-hidden pages from the Klans own handbook; pro- and anti-Klan articles from newspapers and magazines of the period; and much more, including the complete text of Ezra A. Cooks classic piece of investigative reporting, Ku Klux Klan: Secrets Exposed. All unabridged.

Great book. Patrick O'Donnell has successfully assembled a concise history book that is neither boring nor redundant. All aspects of the KKK's violent rise and fall are documented; I am very happy with my purchase!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any scholar of American History   September 11, 2008

I have purchased other books of this nature but none of them were entirely constructed with period writings. Reading the vintage articles, KKK propaganda and government documents gave me great insight not only to the Klan but America in the 1920s.

An informative, and sometimes terrifying, look into the most infamous organized hate group of the early 20th century. Recommended for students of American history.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected   August 20, 2008

In order to understand and learn about the origins of the KKK, this book was purchased. Although there are brief mentions of this detail, the book mainly consists as a manual of the rules and regulations of the KKK throughout the years. As a historical book, this was a waste but as as a detail manual of the historical rules over the many years of the Klan, this would be a justifiable purchase. The format was not interesting at the least bit and was more of a text book format. For what I expected, this was a waste of money.
