4 out of 5 stars Personal Testimonies of Life in the Trenches of the Great War   November 24, 2007
Cory Kilvert has a passionate interest in World War One history and a personal library on the subject to match. His previous book, "Echoes of Armageddon" was very successful in bringing the horrendous carnage of "The Great War" into understandable terms by focusing on the lives, battles and deaths of eight British soldiers.

His latest work, "Comrades in Courage," is divided into five chapters, one for every year of the war. The way in which Mr. Kilvert personalizes the conflict in this particular book is by including reams of personal letters, diaries and poems written during the war by those involved in the conflict. He includes the poetry of famous War poet Sigfried Sasson (which shows the evolution of Sasson's perspective on the war) along with the writings of (almost) completely unknown soldiers. What emerges is a fascinating first-hand account of life in the trenches.

Mr. Kilvert's writing style doesn't always flow; his passion is for the subject, not necessarily for creating beautiful sentences. But for anyone with a previous knowledge of "The Great War," Kilvert's book is a very welcome addition.

5 out of 5 stars A respectful and welcome addition to military testimony shelves.   July 9, 2007

Comrades in Courage, The British Army in France and Flanders, 1914-1918 is a visceral immersion of the British Army's harrowing experience in France and Flanders during World War I (though a few Canadian, American, French, and German soldiers are spoken of). Drawing heavily from non-copyrighted British regimental, brigade, and divisional histories (though usually paraphrasing their wording), Comrades in Courage presents a chillingly clear image of life in the trenches, without creature comforts, enduring nearly constant rain, poison gas attacks, enemy bombardments that could last for days, and the threat of injury or death at any moment. An eclectic variety of tales from those who served under such nightmare conditions induce the reader to understand the bonds, loyalties, and sacrifices of those who put their lives on the line. A respectful and welcome addition to military testimony shelves.
