Interesting, but . . . December 5, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First, I received my copy of this book as a review copy when it was first released as part of a bundle of new releases from this publisher. Therefore let me say I am not among the target audience of this book and normally would not seek something like this out. (My full review ran in Brutarian magazine some time ago.) Here's a brief summary of my opinions. I give it three stars, not five. It's extremely detailed, overly so for my taste, and the author seems to enjoy his subject more than I'd like. However his scholarship is not up to the standards that would make this a definitive encyclopedia or guide to the subject. Instead it's more of a thinly disguised how-to manual on a subject that I'm not sure needs a how-to manual. Gruesome, at times haphazard in its choice of sources, troubling, yet engrossing in a horrible sort of way. One thing that is extremely interesting yet also quite troubling is how much the author learned about the details of how torture techniques work best from Amnesty International reports.
Ranging from amputation and caning to beheading August 10, 2003 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Theatre Of Hell explores and reveals the routine, systematic torture carried on by supposedly civilized countries, cataloging over 100 countries where legal 'judicial' tortures ranging from amputation and caning to beheading, and surveying state-sanctioned punishments for offenses. The common view is that torture is used by uncivilized nations or that torture has long been abolished: Theatre Of Hell shows otherwise.
