Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Defendu, William E. Fairbairns seminal manual on close-quarters combat, is finally available in a quality reprint edition. Originally published in 1926, the book was the first to present Fairbairns hard-core system of close-in fighting under the name by which it became legendary among practitioners of no-holds-barred self-defense and battlefield skills.Through Defendu and his other revolutionary books (including Scientific Self-Defence, Get Tough and All-In Fighting), as well as his years spent training members of the Shanghai Municipal Police in the 1930s and elite-unit soldiers during World War II, W.E. Fairbairn probably had more influence on the evolution of practical hand-to-hand combat than any other individual in modern history. As U.S. Marine Corps veteran and CQC expert Kelly McCann writes in the exclusive foreword to Paladins reprint edition, "W.E. Fairbairn contributed more to the knowledge base of how to kill the enemy in close quarters than perhaps anyone else."

4 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL "GET TOUGH"   April 30, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Only a handful of men of the time have contributed so much to the development of western combatives, one such man is the W. E. Fairbain. He was a visionary of his time and was instrumental in formulating combat techniques for the British Commando and the Shanghai Police that were later adopted and expanded on by other westerners like Applegate.

Fairbain fighting style know as "Defendu" (which he has authored another book titled "Get Tough") which is hybrid of Chinese karate, ju-jitsu and gutter/street fighting, using only the most practical, effective and brutal moves to quickly dispatch an opponent. Every move and technique explained in this book was combat proven in war and on the mean streets of the era. This book also covers topics on; handgun disarming, Knife fighting/defense, and stick fighting.

Overall this is a significant text for ultimately its historical value on the evolution of military combatives. Again the material may be dated and some of the methods debunked. But this does not make this information any less relevant for study.
