Product Description Liz Carlyle has been transferred to Counter-Espionage, along with her research sidekick Peggy Kingsolving. Once the hub of MI5 operations, the department has been reduced in size since the end of the Cold War, and priority within the service is on counter-terrorism. Yet, there is plenty for Liz to do. In fact, there are more spies operating in London today than during the height of East-West hostilities. This includes Russian spies, who continue to operate in number. What's changed is their targets - now they spy on the international financial community that has made London its base in the last twenty years, as well as on the wealthy influential Russian 'oligarchs', many of whom have also come to London to live. Liz learns of a Russian government plot to 'silence' one of these oligarchs, Nikita Brunovsky, who is an increasingly vocal opponent of the Putin regime. How he is to be kept quiet is unclear, but since the Foreign Office dread any kind of incident, Liz is assigned to keep it from happening. Almost simultaneously, Liz and Peggy also learn of the presence of an Illegal Support officer in London, one Vladimir Rykov, who is putatively attached to the Russian embassy. An Illegal is someone who operates (often for many years) under a completely fabricated identity - and Rykov, it seem, has been sent to London to help an Illegal now based there. To protect Brunovsky from his Kremlin foes, Liz goes undercover and joins the oligarch's retinue. As she tries to determine who around the Russian might be willing to betray him, she has to consider too whether this traitor may not also be the Illegal she and Peggy are seeking...

Good BooK- not her best October 30, 2008 Not quite up to the two previous ones but still full of that inside knowledge that makes it real.
Spy - Lite October 20, 2008 Weak plot, too many brand names in the text, chapters short, prose is prosaic and characters thinly described, very unimpressive, I cannot believe the author was head of MI5, also her autobiogaphy tells nothing that a newspaper reader couldnt have read , I believe she thinks we are enthralled but she is actually patronising any reader of the spy genre and is so far from being compared to John Le Carre or Robert Harris, she must have been into administration at her job because spycraft/intelligence is not her forte, forgettable period !
A page ripper October 5, 2008 I saved this for when I went on a cruise, and was not disappointed. Her characters have depth, are not perfect, and are not experts at every aspect of spycraft. Her novels remind me of the Frederick Forsythe thrillers, such as "The Fourth Protocol." That is, they really make me want to read them, having pulled me in. I can't call it a page turner as that's not fast enough. It's more that I want to rip through it, so I call it a page ripper.
moving up October 2, 2008 Rimmington tells a great story every time and her characterizations improve here. On the procedural side - sort of beauracracy noir - but a very good read that is full of scary credible details.
Russian Conspiracy October 1, 2008 The KGB lives on, no matter how the initials change. In this second impelling espionage thriller by the author, former head of Britain's MI-5, we find Liz Carlyle in a bit of a muddle as she is assigned to an undercover role as an "art student" in the household of a Russian billionaire in London. It appears "intelligence" has picked up information of a Russian plot to assassinate a Russian oligarch in the British Isles, which could produce a severe international incident.
Liz has been transferred to counter-espionage. While it was the hub of activity during the Cold War, major MI-5 emphasis is now on counter-terrorism despite the fact that there are probably more Russian spies in London than during the height of East-West hostilities. Now, however, they seem to spy on numerous Russian oligarchs intent on enjoying themselves and spending their money ostentatiously.
In this fine-tuned thriller, the clues are numerous, but misdirections more plentiful. Tersely written, the plot moves forward to a dangerous but satisfying end. Liz is an appealing character, which is more than one can say for some of her co-workers. Recommended.
