Product Description
Sewing is fun, relaxing, and tremendously rewarding. It feels great when you sit down and sew something together (and are tickled with the results)! Besides the fun and satisfaction you get out of sewing, this wonderful hobby can also save you money. You can make your clothes last longer when you stitch up your own hems, repair split seams, and sew on those loose buttons. You can save even more money by making your own home decor projects, such as curtains and pillows.

Sewing For Dummies is a book for both absolute beginners and experienced sewers. If you're a stone-cold beginner, you'll find explanations of all the tools and skills necessary for beginning-level projects. If you've had some experience with sewing, you'll benefit from the tips and tricks that might otherwise take years to pick up.

Whether you're quilting, embroidering, mending, or constructing a project, you'll need to know some sewing basics to get you through your projects. Sewing For Dummies covers all the important sewing fundamentals such as:

  • Mastering hand stitches and machine stitches
  • Reading a sewing pattern
  • Sewing sensational seams
  • Hemming a variety of fabrics
  • Shaping garments with darts, tucks, and pleats
  • Installing zippers, buttons, and other fasteners
  • Negotiating sleeves and pockets
  • Working with home decor fabrics
  • Adjusting projects for better fit and function

Once you've explored the basic techniques, you'll be ready to start some easy sewing projects. This friendly book will guide you through the following projects, and more, with confidence:

  • Children's costumes
  • Tablecloth and place mats
  • Duvet cover
  • Fleece scarf, hat, and jacket ensemble
  • Teddy bear
  • Window treatments
  • Creative pillows

Fabric touches almost everything in a person's daily life. Children cuddle up with pillows and soft toys and dress up in costumes for fun. People wear clothing to be comfortable, stay warm, and to be fashionable. People also appreciate and admire handmade heirlooms. When you finish your projects, wear them with pride, play in them, admire your work, and hand them down to your loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars great book   October 16, 2008
This is an Awesome book, I've not done any sewing since home ec in 8th grade. I loved the fact it told me what settings to set my sewing machine at to do certain stitches.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good overall   August 9, 2008

It seems that most comprehensive or beginners sewing books aren't for true absolute beginners. At least that's my experience in learning to sew from books and buying a bunch. This book though is better than most and for that I'd recommend it. I learnt to sew a seam properly with this book. I found the projects enlosed awful though and I'm not tempted to make any of them, not the greetings card with buttons sewn on, nor the waistcoat made of napkins for example. But, the basic information enclosed is useful although all you need to know isn't here. If I knew what I know now before I bought the books I did, I'd still buy this one, unlike a couple of others I have.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and professionals   March 14, 2008

Some parts get a little confusing, with a few step by steps that don't add up. But, the techniques described in this book will make anyone a better sewer. And, there are great simple project ideas throughout the book for beginners that allow you to practice as you read through the book. I highly enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Helpful Book   January 12, 2008

I'm new to sewing and I purchased several books to help me get started, including this one. It's easy to read and it gave me a good idea of how to do some things, but I would not have been able to sew just by reading this book. It's a perfect companion to other learning aids and I have returned to it several times. It's worth the cost as long as you have other teaching aids at your disposal.
