Sensible, Practical, and Ultimately Reassuring August 24, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My contact with the great outdoors is limited to daily walks in a well-patrolled nature preserve, so I can't comment with authority on the contents, but I find survival guides interesting, and this one's subtitle offered a new twist: short-term survival. Mr. Fears goes on the premise that most lost people are found within 72 hours and slants the book toward getting found as quickly as possible and staying comfortable in the interim. The small book is designed to be tucked in a jacket pocket, yet it's packed with practical advice. Novel and equally helpful are the sections dealing with modern search and rescue and how to cope with fear and the temptation to give up. Just the chapters on signaling for help and putting together a survival kit are worth the price of the book.
