Comprehensive, useful and fun. June 13, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I did some shooting many years ago as a child and then went on to other things. Recently I've encountered some colleagues who shoot and I've joined them. I wanted a comprehensive introduction to rifle shooting, and I found it in this book. The Rifle Guide has nearly 300 pages of useful and well-written information. It includes some history of the rifle (going back to Colonial times), some fairly complex ballistics, good analysis of various actions, calibers, scopes, and hunting. There are also chapters on handloading, air rifles, and effective rifle handling. So what we have here is a truly comprehensive overview of the sport of rifle shooting. It has enough information to whet the appatite, but doesn't bog down in needless detail. Complete books can probably be found that cover each issue in much greater detail. However, the joy of this book is that it does not go overboard in details. So, the shooter looking for lots of information on any aspect of rifle shooting will not find it here. Nonentheless, any one searching for a high quality overview will find plenty of good reading and good information here. Definatley for the generalist rather than the specialist.
You must have this book September 1, 2000 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Whether you've been shooting and hunting for years, or just wanting to get started, this book is a must-have for the rifle owner. It doesn't matter what caliber, modern, antique or muzzleloader, this book tells all you need to know about your rifle. Additionally, if you're looking to make a purchase, consulting this book helps you identify what you need for what purpose. The writing is clear and not too technical, although Fedala definitely goes into great detail, especially about ballistics. All rifle owners should own a copy of this book.
A good reference-useful for general information about rifles September 29, 1998 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I found the book useful, from a reference point of view-the writer certainly makes his preferences known about various calibers and models of rifles he prefers for hunting small to large game.
