 A Stand Out among Many February 13, 2008
I purchased this book some time ago but didn't start to read it until a few days ago. In an increasingly crowded market of Amish/Mennonite books, I was getting a little put off by the similar plots. But Beverly stands out in the crowd- this was a fantastic read. I can't wait for the next in the series to come out. She is able to keep the plot fresh and exciting. I highly recommend!!

Beverly Lewis has a true gift for writing. Other authors may try to imitate and capitalize on her success of writing of the Amish, but their quality does not come close. Endearing characters that feel like longtime friends, heart wrenching plots all with a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel, and with God's help. I cried and laughed and anticipated with these characters. Anyone would truly love these novels and all her others, too. Beverly is a woman of God and it shows in her stories. I have read the others and was so disappointed. Nothing compares to Beverly, once you have read hers you will never be able to stomach the rest. You won't be able to put these books down!
A must read February 10, 2008
For me this was an important book. I had no prior knowledge concerning the Amish position on reading the bible. I had assumed that since they have given up the earthly world to embrace the plain world, they also read the word.
I learned through the message of this book that the Amish do not read the word for themselves. The bishop's interpretation of the word is what they believe. Reuben's discovery of the word as he read the key to everlasting life is not through good works, but by embracing his belief in Jesus as the savior.
As Reuben cherishes and rejoices the word, his fears and woes dissapate. He becomes born again of the spirit. Reuben's love for his wife takes a new direction, as does his love for his children. He cries for the first time as he hears the truth for the first time; Jesus died for us, for our sins. He learns about forgiveness and the power of individual prayer.
Reuben wanted to share his love for others by sharing the word with all his family and friends. He and Manny want to start a bible study focusing on the books of the new testement. The bishop does not support their efforts. So the parting.
Reading the bible for themselves becomes the parting of the Amish community. There are those who received the grace of God through their reading, and those who continue to join the bishop's Sunday services. So the tension throughout the community begins.
I am anxiously awaiting for the second book in this series. I am awaiting to see where Ms. Lewis takes this thread. How the Amish resolve this critical threat to their old beliefs in the old world.

Beverly Lewis has written some masterpieces, but this is not one of them.
Nellie, a young Amish girl is in mourning for the death of her younger sister by drowning, and strange things are happening to the community to which her sister's "wild" life is attributed as perhaps the cause.
As Nellie starts to heal, her boyfriend Caleb is her closest friend. However, a huge rift is starting within the Amish community over Salvation and reading the Bible for yourself and as well as some farmers wanting newer machinery to make life easier. Community wants and needs are sure to separate families, friends, and even husband and wife.
I am certain that book two will explain lots of the gaps and unknowns in this book, but it was certainly not one of Beverly's finest.

In THE PARTING, Book 1 of well loved inspirational author Beverly Lewis' new series she sets the time of 1966 when there was a great upheaval between the Old Order Amish and others who questioned the Old ways, who found other parts of the bible to read and study. It centers around teen Nellie Fisher who is still grieving over the death of her younger sister Suzy who was in a drowning accident. On top of that, she has been noticed by Caleb Yoder, a young Amish man whom she has secretly had a crush on for some time. Complications arise when members of the Old Order community sense the winds of change that threaten to divide families as well as putting pressure on Nellie's budding new romance.
*** Beverly Lewis's newest tale spotlights the life of teen Nellie Fisher and the Amish tradition of Rumschpringe (rumspringa, or the running-around period for Amish teens) which I couldn't help to find quite fascinating. When I've thought of the Amish people of think of the strict guidelines they seem to be under and this `running-around' period seemed extremely open-minded to me, including allowing for a beau to be allowed into a young girls bedroom to court. This rather blew my mind - for the Amish to be so strict in some things and to allow courting in the girl's bedroom - I can only assume they had to leave the door open!
Getting back to the main storyline which centers around Nellie who is trying to get over the grief and guilt of losing her younger sister Suzie, the author weaves a gentle story showing the turmoil Nellie dealt with thinking her beloved sister had crossed over the line and was running `wild' with the `worldly' people. Nellie was torn in wanting to defend Suzy but not knowing the truth she worried how it would affect her romance with Caleb who was strictly aligned with the `old world' order, and whose father would have condemned his association with Nellie given the rumors still flying around about Suzie's death.
Along with Nellie's story the author lays the groundwork in setting up other storylines of her good but barren friend Rosanna who is promised a baby from an expectant mother who has several; Nellie's father who reads the forbidden parts of the bible and is intrigued and inspired by this portion of the bible and the repercussions of division amongst her family; but most of all how it all affects Nellie's relationship with Caleb.
This first book is a rare treat for those with little knowledge of the Amish traditions and culture. It is a gently written eye opener filled to the brim with the Amish principles and dialect inviting the reader to step in and sample Amish life. Very entertaining and well-written, this first book will be a treat for fans and new readers alike that I highly recommend.
