2 out of 5 stars Mediocre writing   April 6, 2008

While this is a subject that could certainly command a wide reader audience, the stories are so-so, the women portrayed are competent at what they do but don't show much in the way of heroic temperament or charismatic personality. They would show up a whole lot better if the writer had more skill. This reads like high school essays with girlish overtones. The insertion of military terms and jargon where indicated just do not ring true as part of the overall battle experience.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC - AWESOME - A MUST FOR EVERYONE   April 5, 2008
I think this is one of the best books I have read and am still reading ever. It tells the side of our fighting women right on the front lines. You get lost into their stories and cry when they do. I know most Americans realize how many female soldiers are over seas but this book tells them what they go through. Whether a pilot is shot down, a grunt fighting along the men or even how they cope once they are back on base and begin their journey home. So many books and movies over the years have been about the men fighting but this time, next to Vietnam, women aer protrayed as heros. They just want to fight along their brothers and do what they are trained to do - PROTECT INNOCENT LIVES AND PROTECT OUR UNTITED STATES OF AMERICA!! It's a must purchase for anyone men and women a like. The author is fanstastic and so are the women in the this book. WAY TO GO TO ALL OF YOU BRAVE SOLDERIERS REGARDSLESS OF SEX. YOU ARE MY TRUE HERO! GOD BLESS THEM AND OUR UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

5 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is   February 23, 2008
Do not miss this book! Band of Sisters tells the stories and shares the insights of 12 women serving in the Iraq War, who represent different branches of the military and have different types of jobs. Many photographs show the women, their comrades and the harsh setting. The women explain what is it like to experience both the human and technical sides of combat and how they earned respect as competent soldiers/sailors/marines/airwomen and team players. Although some of their stories include horrific events, the narratives are blessedly free of gore. Instead, we learn how they faced and surmounted incredible challenges that were simply part of the job. Some of them had joined the National Guard or Reserves, never expecting to be in combat. All of them carried out their duties and made sacrifices in defense of country, family and comrades. Some were seriously wounded. I was particularly inspired by the story of pilot Lt. Col. Polly Montgomery, who was especially good at helping her troops handle separation from their families because she was separated from her husband and three children. There is a nice epilogue on "where they are now." This book is destined to be a military classic!

5 out of 5 stars response to Kirstjen Lorenz   December 28, 2007

I would like to respond to Kirstjen Lorenz's comment/ review on Band of Sisters. The women profiled in the book are ALL real women with real issues that they deal with daily.....same as the rest of us, except for the added pressure of fighting a WAR! I have met and worked with all of these women...and yes they know eachother quite well both personally and professionally, as the military creates a bond that is seldom understood by civilians, hence the "Band of Sisters" titling of this piece. As for the "everything good, and perfect" comment....enough has been written about the negative things going on in this war and not enough time has been spent treating these Men and Women like the people/ humans that they are! I enjoyed the time spent around these ladies, as I had the pleasure of working on the promo video trailer for the book and listening to their individual stories, as well as meeting their families. Please consider the fact that what they are doing is vital to the way of life we all lead, and the freedom you and I enjoy to speak about such things. I applaud ALL of the Ladies and gentlemen of our armed forces, for the work they are doing, and for allowing us to get an inside look at some of their everyday lives.
