2 out of 5 stars Selling his training method, no techniques in the book   April 13, 2004

This book doesn't cover very much of anything useful in a fight, it's mostly anecdotal stories and selling his training at his school in colorado. Interesting read, and somewhat informative, but disappointing because it never discusses any methods one can use (except to come to his school in colorado and train for real.)

5 out of 5 stars Real Self Defense for the Real World   January 7, 2004

I recently finished reading this book and had to re-read it. The author focuses on surviving in the real world. The mind is greatly overlooked so much in preparing for an actual fight. Traditional schools teach controlled sparring, point fighting or forms/kata/kyung believing that it is the best. Here he addresses using 100 percent force quickly and staying with what works. It is this concept that governs why rookie cops are always sent out with veterans. The veterans have the coolness and experience to handle the situation. On the streets things just happen fast and the cooler head is the one who survives! Here the author focuses on keeping alert and not being the victim. A lot of school instructors should experience this course before being allowed to claim they teach effective self defense. He is bringing real life experience to the reader. Great reading for anyone into self defense.

4 out of 5 stars Reality bites hard!   November 18, 2003

This is a very good book. It's an eye opener if you're a martial artist with no real fight experience. Sparring in a dojo or in the ring is not the same as a fight in real life. Peyton is a very down-to-earth person and it's always pleasant to read his works. If you want to ask him questions you can visit his forum at the Geoff Thompson's web site who is another great reality based fighter.

5 out of 5 stars A serious ingredient for the real mix   February 28, 2003

My name is John Perkins. I am the author of ATTACK PROOF. I have only been a bouncer as a youth but as a police officer I have been involved in well over a thousand arrests. Over 100 of these arrests turned into blood baths. Many more could have gone in the same direction if not for knowing how to read a possible serious violent conflict ahead of time. Mr. Quinn's book REAL FIGHTS is one that I highly recommend to my students. Many of these are Nightclub security specialists (bouncers) in NYC and other establishments which were considered "problem" clubs. After reading the book and following with classroom practice my students found that the principles worked well in many cases. My law enforcement students also use a good deal of the information. The military is a bit different. The engagements of my Marine and Spec Ops members are of a different character in the field but during civilian situations the information has proven quite useful. Read this book carefully and then read it again. It could save you a bunch of paperwork as well as your hide. Remember, luck always favors the prepared man. Take care

5 out of 5 stars A book that goes down in martial arts history.   January 19, 2003

If you live in this violent time and need to learn about martial arts, you need to learn about the mind of the people who you will be defending you're self from first.Have no illusions that they are out there. Whene it goes down you need to see it first then deal with it.
I study videos and read books but none compared to this one whene it comes to the subject of the combative mind set.Musashi would write the same thing if he lived in this time.
If you care about protecting yourself whene the time comes, read this book. If you are a practicing martial arts anyway you need to read this book.Believe me,you will be glad you did.
