Met the man...read his story...want YOU to read it! March 21, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful

I met Tommy & Paul at a book signing in Mississippi. Thomas Hamill is a very humble man. Thanks Paul for writing a book that us "common folk" can enjoy...without having to wade through the "elites" vocabulary overkill. Like almost everyone, I knew the story...even it's ending...yet I didn't want to lay it down. I didn't tire of hearing the detailed accounts of Tommy's day to day (all 24 of them) events while captive because it caused me to feel like I was right there in the rooms and vehicles with him. His almost comical way of naming his captors based on their personalites made each charater involved more vivid. It is an inspiring story of faith in God and how "waiting" on God's "timing" is so vital...something we all need a lesson in. When I've watched other hostages aired on TV, pleading and crying as they begged for someone to rescue them, I felt so sad, because unlike Tommy, they had no peace...only torment and fear. Read how Tommy's faith in God not only carried him from day to day...but from minute to minute through what he referred to as..."the valley of the shadow of death".
very disappointing February 16, 2005 2 out of 18 found this review helpful
I wonder if all the other people that wrote reviews actually read the same book as I did. While the whole thing was a scary and heroic experience I'm sure, it did not make for a great read. Like a soap opera, the middle 150 pages or so could have been removed and the reader would not have missed anything. I guess it was very much the same for Hamill, day in and day out, and if thats what he wanted to get across to the reader, he did a splendid job. Very disappointing and boring book. I am glad for Mr. Hamill that he was captured when he was and not at some later point when his fate would have been forever sealed. It seems to me that with the lack of being continually guarded that he could have escaped many times and a lot sooner and spared us the middle 150 pages.
A CIVILIAN WAR STORY February 6, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The experience of living through an encounter while many of your friends have been killed and then being captured by the enemy not knowing if your life is going to be spared is a terrible happening. This book details before, during, and after this episode in Iraq to a non-military participant working for the military as a truck driver. Spiritual faith is what kept Mr. Hamill going along with his concern of his family. Without any kind of instruction (except prayer) He was able to satisfy his jailers where they did not torture nor do away with him and was finally able to escape on his own. The writing was not superb, however, the story keeps you interested.
The next "Passion of the Christ?" January 21, 2005 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
This story could become the next "Passion of the Christ." It is that inspiring and stirring! Mr. Hamill is a common man who conquered a trying ordeal through his faith. The image on the wall is so mesmerizing. Once I started, I could not stop reading.
A must read !!! January 13, 2005 This story is truly incredible and what is more incredible is how Thomas Hamill's faith allowed him to survive this ordeal and return to his family. The book is an easy read and stays intriguing throughout. You will not be disappointed. What an ordeal.
