High Power Rifle Accuracy: Before You Shoot April 14, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the best book on the subject that I have read. I have also read more than my far share. From what I can tell, and my extensive background in firearms, I believe that all the information to be factual, and a great resource for anybody want my knowledge on how to accurize a rifle.
Every Handloader & Rifle Shooter Must Read-"Bull's Eye" April 3, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I found Mr. Arnold's book to be very infomative and easy to understand, since I own two Arnold rifles that are by far the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. This book is right on the Mark, since I have been handloading for over 20+ years I have never come accross a reloading manual that keeps it simple and easy to understand for us layman. Both my Arnold rifles shoot well under 1/2" groups, mostly around .250" or less @ 100yds. It's working well for me!! Plus I'm not trying to sell you other shooting products, unlikelike other reviewers...
Old basic info wrapped in a new book and well off title March 9, 2006 25 out of 29 found this review helpful
I've found that gun books are like rock groups; some are good at performing, some are good at posing for pictures. The latter is how I would categorize "High Power Rife Accuracy - Before You Shoot" a book written by Douglas E. Arnold, ex CEO of Arnold Arms Co. Inc. and offered through Stoeger Publications. Clearly, the cover shot is the most interesting part of the book.
The substance of the book, the text that actually honors the title, is 44 pages long, but then the first 10 of these pages are dedicated to: publisher's info, the forward, the table of contents and a blank page. So let's make that 33 pages of the 368 that provide anything uniquely on topic. The balance of the 368 pages first reflects cliche handloading and shooting tips then, oddly enough, suddenly makes a transition into a mediocre reloading manual. Remember the name of the book? Much of the passages read like Dr. Phil, where the author attempts to establish slogans, tag lines and memorable acronyms, all which escape my memory at the moment other than the recollection that the lengths of the slogans frequently kept pace with the explanations of the concepts .
The balance of the book offers a few pages of very basic formulas that can be found in virtually every reloading manual, or found incorporated into lots of free software and many firearm related web sites. The section on formulas is followed by an overview of basic handloading techniques and basic handloading tools, followed by some reloading data. The first 20 pages of handloading data are dedicated to Arnold Magnums, followed by lots of less than specific data for standard cartridges. My favorite tip for accurate handloading is "Always seat Hornady and Speer bullets to .010"-.020" shorter overall cartridge length than the suggested starting lengths , since the starting lengths shown are primarily for Sierra and Nosler bullets". Of course the load data that follows does not indicate specific bullets cartridge overall length so I am not sure to what the .010"-.020" adjustment would apply. Remember the name of this book?
Conclusion - Save your money, buy a good reloading manual published by a serious equipment manufacturer or component supplier. If you want to immerse yourself in well grounded concepts and theory, buy a copy of Modern Reloading by Richard Lee or Any Shot You Want - The A-Square Handloading Manual.
