5 out of 5 stars Ron Paul is a modern day prophet.   February 3, 2008
6 out of 7 found this review helpful

This book was an amazing collection of Ron Paul's speeches in Congress and Ron Paul sprinkled in his current opinions of his former speeches even criticizing himself at times. Everyone should read this book before passing judgement on the man running for President that the media makes out to be a nut. Dr. No has systematically over the years predicted all the foreign policy errors and their results many years before they happened including the 2nd Iraq War. The man is a modern day political prophet and people should really read this book whether they agree with his views or not.

5 out of 5 stars A Voice of Reason Amongst Congressional Ignorance   February 1, 2008

This book is a time-line, revealing the consistent rationality of one man against a dangerously ignorant congressional body. Ron Paul provides the reader with the ability to distinguish between a foreign-policy of interventionism, and a foreign-policy of freedom. Ron Paul, with a mixture of principled morality and resounding logic, repeatedly warned the congressional body of the consequences that would follow our foreign policy of interventionism. Ron Paul has proven himself as a man for the people, as his predictions of our foreign policy's consequences have proven to be true. A must read for anyone who thinks themselves politically conscious.

5 out of 5 stars Wait... that's stupid!   January 26, 2008

The quickest description I could possibly give of this book is:

30 years of Ron Paul on the inside telling our leaders, "wait... that's stupid," as they repeat foreign policy mistakes over and over (and over) again.

Of course, Dr. Paul's more eloquent than that. If you've only seen Paul on debates you may notice that he sometimes has trouble delivering the catchy soundbites in 30 second snippets. Don't let that fool you! When given the time needed to explain his ideas, he's a heck of a speaker. His speeches are clear, concise, and logical.

One of the great things about this book is reading a speech from the 70s and realizing that it is just as applicable in the 80s... and 90s... and today. We face the same problems year after year, but the people in congress never (I mean NEVER) learn from their mistakes. Ron Paul comes off as prescient, but he's really just stating the obvious from years of foreign policy mistakes and predictable failures. Unfortunately his fellow congressmen (and women) don't listen and don't learn.

It's not too late for you though! Read. Listen. Learn.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Record of Lunacy   January 22, 2008

No, not the lunacy of Dr. Paul--but of American foreign policy. The thoughts expressed in this collection of speeches hold no surprises if you are familiar with Dr. Paul's philosophy of constitutional government. As a man of principle his reasoning and actions are transparent. If you are not familiar with his ideas you may be startled at the concept of letting other countries decide their own fates. While I do not agree with everything he believes, I am in awe of the perseverance of his stand. I would have given up and gone home.
These speeches (before congress) are laid out in chronological order. I found it unsettling that Dr. Paul was, year after year, being ignored by his fellow representatives as they made the same mistakes over and over. The same policies were being carried out under every administration whether the majority in congress was Democratic or Republican.
Dr. Paul warns over and over that our unconstitutional (undeclared) wars will lead to an imperial presidency and to attacks on U.S. soil. Did his peers listen? No. Have they changed their ways since 9/11--when "everything changed"? No. Nothing will change in our country till the people grow a backbone and learn to stand for principle. Dr. Paul is not, cannot be, the savior of liberty in the United States. He is, however, a shining example of what each of us, as a citizen, can be.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all Citizens   January 21, 2008

This is a collection of essays and speeches given by Ron Paul, mostly on the floor of the US House of Representatives. Reading this will open your eyes to the fact that Congress is no longer representing "we, the people", but instead the powerful corporate interests. He asks, why do we still have 700 bases around the world and spend hundreds of billions of American dollars policing the world? Why do we still have troops in Korea fifty years later? Why are we still protecting, at our expense, the wealthy nations of Western Europe? And from whom are we protecting them? Why is NATO still relevant if its reason for existence, the Soviet Union, has been gone for 20 years?

It is because our policy has been bent to serve the politically connected at the expense of Americans. All of those old commitments equal money to the persons & corporations that profit from the old order. We have become an empire at the expense of our Republic. Worse still than the cost, is the resentment this generates around the world against us.

You will find that almost every one of the things he predicted in this book years ago has come to pass. However, he didn't have a crystal ball, he just paid attention to history and the US Constitution. We were warned about this by our founders. Ron Paul is one of the few in Congress who still knows what the founders tried so hard to do--to restrain the natural human tendencies to abuse power.

This book is a history lesson about US Foreign policy. It also is a warning to us that we are headed down a dangerous path. Finally, he includes chapters on what a proper foreign policy for us should look like: "Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations...entangling alliances with none."
