5 out of 5 stars Great cornerstone book on self defense...   March 25, 2008
This book is the cornerstone book when it comes to a citizens personal protection with firearms. Though it is somewhat outdated, this book clearly spells out the cornerstones and building blocks to personal defense. This is an excellent book that should be in the library of any person who is serious about self defence.

5 out of 5 stars Armed Response   March 2, 2008

This is a must read if you have ever considered keeping or carrying a gun for personal protection. There is so much more resposibility to it than just expecting the perp, police, media, neighbors to behave like the TV productions lead us to believe.

I had never have thought about the legal responsibilities of shooting somebody - knowing what not to say when you are arrested, and you probably will be arrested. The financial, emotional, personal, mental crises that you will be facing are scary.

But then you also must consider the alternative if you are ever faced with that life/death situation.
Easy to read - Worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book but needs updating   December 24, 2007

This book is a "must read" for anyone contemplating the use of a handgun for personal defense whether it be in the home or for concealed carry. Masssad Ayoob is "the man" when it comes to the use of firearms for personal protection. His straight forward approach and no-nonsense style are the perfect combination for this most serious subject.

The only complaint is that the book is slightly outdated when it comes to pistol and ammunition information. Since the book was written in 1980 many changes have taken place most notibly is the wide spread use of semi-auto matic handguns. The book refers to the .38 special revolver as the definitive weapon for law inforcement. I think today you would be hard pressed to find any police officer carrying a revolver or that caliber.

The author also sites several legal cases and presidents. I suspect these also are very outdated. It would be hard to imagine that many, many changes haven't taken place in the legal system regarding this issue in the last 25 years!

In conclusion, if you're going to carry a gun for personal defense, read this book first. However keep in mind that the information on gun types, ammunition, and the legal stories are very outdated. And therfore I would like to make this plea to Massad - please write an updated version.

5 out of 5 stars In the Gravest Extreme   October 11, 2007

The book dialoges when and why you would ever use a handgun to protect yourself. It cleared up a lot of misconceptions on my part. It helped me prepare for my concealed handgun license class. It gave me enough evidence to have an intelligent conversation with the instructor so that I could get the most out of the class. The book is short and quick enough to read in an afternoon.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book but Out of Date   September 26, 2007

Massad Ayoob wrote this in 1980, and after 27 years, there have been a lot of changes in the US legal system. For example, concealed carry is legal in most of the US. The big trouble with this book is there is no way for a lay person to know what's no longer valid. Basing personal actions on the out-of-date book can cause you to have a very bad day.

I recommend The Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, and Shoot a Gun in Self Defense (Concealed Handgun Manual: How to Choose, Carry, & Shoot a Gun in Self Defense) instead of this book. "The Conceal Handgun Manual" has been updated and provides a great wealth of information for about the same price.

Massad, please update this book!
