2 out of 5 stars Skeptical   June 4, 2007

Author attempts to illustrate complex points of law by citing unverifiable incidents and implausible acts of daring, most of which I remain skeptical of. Though I am in agreement with Ayoob philosophically in matters of self-defense, law is separate matter entirely, and one that is not adequately addressed in this short treatise. Big on bravado but short on legal-sense, Ayoob misses the mark with this one.

2 out of 5 stars OBSOLETE   May 27, 2007

THE AUTHOR OF THIS WORK IS WITHOUT EQUAL IN HIS SUBJECT MATTER. HIS ADVICE IS TIMELESS AND HIS METHODS SOUND. HOWEVER, HIS TECHNOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE IS 20 YEARS OUT OF DATE AND THEREFORE USELESS TODAY. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A CURRENT AYOOB SELF-DEFENSE BOOK.

4 out of 5 stars Great For Legal Considerations   May 12, 2007

The legal/moral info is very good & still relevant but a lot of the ammo/gun selection & wound ballistics info is very dated & no longer considered accurate. The book is still worthy of a spot in the personal defense library, but the last few chapters are very much in need of an update.

1 out of 5 stars Wonderful book   January 15, 2007

Very thoughtfully presented material. The responsibility of carrying a firearm is stressed as well as the opportunity to serve those around us.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading!   November 10, 2006

I bought this book after I had taken LFI-1 course as a quasi-refresher
on some of the topics that were covered in the legalities aspect of the course.(BTW, I thought LFI did a great job of giving me some
basichandling skills and insights... It opened the door to other, more
relevant training.)

For those who've never heard of the book, it was probably one of the first
discussions about when and where a civilian can use lethal force to
protect themselves and how to deal with some of the legal aftermath if
the SHTF.

The book is still 99% relevant to the issue it explores after 30 years!
The book examines some of the baiscs of the laws regarding when a civilian can use lethal force. Those haven't changed that much over the
years; they are still goverend by Ability, Opportunity, Jeopardy, etc...

There are sections of the book that are a bit outdated, such as the
section regarding women and guns and "hardware"/caliber selection, but
some of the basic safety "rules" and rudimentary shooting items are a
good introduciton.
