Thinly disguised religious advertising. July 18, 2008 5 out of 12 found this review helpful
Majority of this book pertains to conversations with God espousing religious principals. this would be fine if the synopsis indicated this as opposed to pretending to be about a kidnapping whici appears to be thinly applied in order to sell the book to a broader marketplace. I found the writing amateurish.

When you've lost a child it is devastating. When another person is responsible for it, the anger is compounded. The why's, what if's, I should have been able to protect my child...these are all things that you wonder, then the biggest...WHY God, why...The Shack gives us hope. Hope that all God has promised us is happening. Jesus is with our children and us always..I highly recommend The Shack...I believe it is GOD inspired.
Well Written July 18, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
In a time where fact based fiction (Think DaVinci Code) is very popular and portrayed as non-fiction, I found it refreshing that the author was up front about this story and the characters being made up. I read this book in two days. If you are looking for something to push your thoughts about God and Jesus to a new or different perspective, this might be for you. I have struggled with the concepts of organized religion taking the place of relationship with God, and while this book didn't answer any questions- it's fiction- it pushed me to consider alternatives.
Let's be clear, this is a good read and does what books are supposed to do- create an environment allowing you to think and expand. Some will call this blasphemy and rogue theology. Others will call it divine inspiration. I doubt the intentions and agendas of both. This is a fictional book, written by a human. There are no roadmaps to God, only writings to inspire us to search. This book is one small blip on my personal map. Hope you find what you are looking for. Well written
Awesome! July 18, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Any time a book makes me think, I like it. This allegory gave me a chance to explore my daily walk with God, and how much He loves us all! Truly a book to read again and again!
Heart of God July 18, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read this book on Resurrection Sunday. I finished it in one day. I could not put it down. I am aware that some of the imagry Young uses to depict the Trinity will be offensive to some. Also, the idea of a God who really, really wants to fellowship with us, and who loves us WITHOUT CONDITION is more than some can believe. Nevertheless, I went through every point of the book where it challenged conventional orthodoxy, and I was able to find Scripture that supported the story.
Young is NOT a universalist. He does NOT say that "all roads lead to God". What he DOES say is that God has reconciled the world to Himself through Jesus Christ, and that He will go to great lengths to reach us with that message. If some will not accept it, there is another place they can go, by their own choice. But for those who receive, "To them He gave the power to become His Children . . . ".
