Life Changing Lecture August 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I listened to the audio version of this book. It was good to hear Randy Pausch tell his story .. in his own voice. I will forever deal with situations in life remembering the Tigger vs the Eyore attitude. I think it safe to say that I will always lean toward bouncing with Tigger. Once you have read or listened to this lecture, how can you not embrace your inner Tigger? or go after you dreams?
Here is an excellent example of one man making a huge change in the world. A man like that... he will be missed.
The CD unabridged version is only 4 CD's..... I really recommend that you get this... you will be happy that you did and you'll pass it on to a friend. I'm sending mine to my brother who is a teacher. I'm hoping he'll share his with his students. This is one of of those Pass It On books. Happy reading! JMHO //(*_*)\\
Deeply moving August 5, 2008 Randy Pausch's book, The Last Lecture, is every bit as moving and insightful as his live lecture on which it is based, which itself became a YouTube and media sensation. He has now sadly passed away, but the video and this book of his last lecture will live on. The book goes beyond academia, and provides thoughts on life that are greatly beneficial to all. An example of a great book by a great professor (and a great guy) that both well deserve all the accolades they have received.
The Last Lecture August 4, 2008 By now, Randy has passed. The book documents a stressful bout with pancreatic cancer which is incurable through most known methods. Although, the complementary medical practitioners have made some headway with the disease. Randy's case presented 10 tumors around the liver and a limited time to live.
His mother was a tough English teacher. Randy dreamed about being the coolest guy in the amusement park. A picture of the quadratic formula was painted on his wall. In addition, he dreamed about emulating Captain Kirk.
The author gave us some practical advice to follow as a part of practical life skills; namely, o manage time o plan o develop a good filing system o rethink phone use to save time and cost
Randy sent out thin mints as a reward to students and relevant others who reviewed technical papers. The presentation shows a personal side to the author that few people could divine previously.
The Last Lecture Rocks - Randy Pausch Has a Key to Your Future August 3, 2008 Pancreatic Cancer sucks.
Actually, all cancer sucks, but this one is particularly insidious. (Side note: There is a fantastic TED Talk regarding the possible origin and how cancer may be trying to help. How turning a "bit" in the DNA of cancer cells may help accelerate healing. A must watch: http://www.thoughtoffice.com/?page_id=332 ).
I have shared Randy's story with my 3 kids. With my employees. With friends. With my mentors. And with my Mom (who has hospiced more than 16 people dying of various forms of cancer, including her own mother and father).
This is an important work. It is an ideal support piece for the video. And the message is timeless: - Do what you love, the rest will follow. - Be passionate about what you do. There is no room for mediocrity in our lives, and our work. - Love deeply, with conviction. - Play! A great life is one that is as much play as work (and make sure work is play to you). - Be interested in life. Be curious. Never lose that sense of wonder and awe. - Support and encourage others, always. - Build great relationships, and you'll get much further than you might otherwise. Brute force has nothing compared to persuasion.
I very much enjoyed the book. We should learn these lessons from the moment we're old enough to focus our eyes.
I highly recommend The Last Lecture to anyone who wants to get the most out of life.

An incredible book August 3, 2008 The book, The last Lecture, by Randy Pausch is a very moving and insightful book. He passed away about a week ago. Yet his book and the video of his last lecture will live on. His comments about academics and life are extremely relevant, and it is no wonder that his book is (at this time) the nation's best seller.
