1 out of 5 stars Avoid!   October 4, 2006

You can read my comparative amazon review of 3 titles - 'Blueprints Medicine', 'First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship', and 'Step-Up to Medicine' - at 'Step-Up to Medicine', ISBN:0781747872

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good. Use along with other books depending on purpose.   May 20, 2006

This is a fairly decent book to read during medical school medicine rotations. It is comprehensive but I found that it did not include enough detail on many topics. You will without a doubt need some other sources during your rotation. "Washington Manual" and Ferri's "Practical Guide to The Care of the Medical Patient" are both excellent. I found Ferri's book to be more helpful in terms of the organization, readability, and information. I was not at LSU, but came across the "LSU Notes." If you can find the "LSU Notes" in internal medicine, they are an excellent resource as well. The medicine "Pre-Test" book was helpful when studying for the shelf exam, although not all medical schools use those.

For USMLE Step 2, I used the blueprints books in conjunction with the "First Aid" book and the "Prescription for the Boards" book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Your Medicine Rotation   November 18, 2005

If you want to learn internal medicine in a quick amount of time, pick up this book and read a chapter or two everyday. It's not that difficult. This is a must for you medicine rotation as it will allow you to get a breadth of knowledge relatively quickly. But in order to be a superstar you will need to read up from a serious reference book and/or UptoDate on your specific patients. You should do this for every rotation.

As for questions, the ones in this book are okay but you really need MKSAP to get thorough preparation for your Shelf Exam.

4 out of 5 stars Good as a companion to 2nd year coursework   January 3, 2005
This book serves as a good introduction to medicine and diagnostics of the diseases covered in second year. Since the chapters are organ-based, the book overlapped well with my school's curriculum. It is best used in second year because each chapter covers the diseases that you will be covering in class plus the diagnostic tools that are used to identify the diseases. (For example AST and ALT ratio values and alcoholic hepatitis). Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the final word, either   February 28, 2004

This is a decent book for an introduction to the wards, but is certainly not the be all and end all for step 2. It should be targeted much more for second year students getting their first exposure to bedside medicine, and presents a nice and digestible look at approaches to various common conditions.

Use it for what it is and don't expect it to save your life, either on the wards or the USMLE, and it'll do just fine by you. Not bad, but again, not complete enough or in depth enough to make it a must-have resource.
