I found Tolle's book to be a wonderful resource on how to live in the moment. Through clear explanations of access points and hindrances, the reader can discover how to attain the so often considered elusive state of enlightenment. Where everyday life becomes an enriching and savoring experience. Another inspiring guide to living a meaningful life is called "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work," by Ariel & Shya Kane. I highly recommend both of these books.
A must have October 30, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
There is nothing I can add to the other reviews except my vote: This is truly important book and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is for all readers, not just those who enjoy "spiritual" books (it is on the second such book I had ever read). I have bought many copies for friends and they in turn have done the same. If you are tempted to buy his "sequel", "Practicing the Power of Now", please, please be sure to read the reviews first - it is a poor abridged version of the original and in my opinion does not contain the lifeblood of "The Power of Now".
An extraordinary presence of being October 25, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
E. Tolle's own reading of his work is well worth the purchase and investment in hearing, again and again. His voice carries a presence and cannot be described only experienced. The book is a wonderful read, but it invites the intellect, the mind, to intercede, interpret, contradict and to allow the reader to miss an underlying truth running like a gentle stream throughout the work. Tolle's own reading, however, carries the reader like a fallen leaf, gently floating, observing and sensing the stream beneath and the world around. I listened to these tapes continuously on a three day cross-country drive. And they have not been out of my vehicle during my daily 2 hour commute. I have heard new things with each listening. I have seen 'new' things in each commute. Perhaps I was simply ready, but hearing this has changed me and it has begun to change my life.
not enough October 25, 2001 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
There are a lot of helpful insights in this work of tolle. But although he says he was not affected from any other particular teachings, I have strongly felt the effects of J.Krishnamurti in almost most parts of the book. The concepts such as 'observer and the observed', 'the thinker', 'pure observation of thought' was used by Krishnamurti before. I felt like he was interpreting what Krishnamurti said.I would be quite astonished if he really was not affected by Krishnamurti as he says. So I would recommend the readers of Tolle to read Krishnamurti if they have not meet him till now. I think that is the origin of all these other teachings. I think tolle had difficulty to understand what krishnamurti meant when he said 'the self' or 'the me' was totally illusionary. Having difficulty to understand this, some have created the concept of 'higher self' just like Tolle did as far as I observed. And we must always keep in our mind that it is so easy to go into an illusion created by the mind. So finally I have seen some helpfull insights in this book but I strongly recommend the origin which is krishnamurti's teachings. Tolle have published another book which is about the practice of living in the now and practising meditation. I did not even find it worth for reading since I know it as a fact that 'there is no method no practice of meditation and there is absolutely no guru who will teach methods of meditation in the search of truth since 'truth is a pathless land' as krishnamurti says.' I would recommend to all to stay away from those who say they have methods for enlightment.
