A tremendous read for those of us who are asleep at the wheel of life.

I'm convinced this is the best book on Spiritual Englightenment ever written. It is simple, clear, direct and easy to read. Given the subject, that is a major feat in itself. Written in the form of a dialogue, it's more like a conversation than a textbook. If every human being could learn to be "present" in the way that Tolle suggests, all the problems that plague the human race would be ended. This book can unlock the riddles of the universe. Wow!
The YOU is waiting for the past/future you to be quiet. August 31, 2000 29 out of 34 found this review helpful
I used to think long Amazon reviews were a little obnoxious. I have a feeling I'm about to ramble on about my how I have been changed.
You never know when a book can change your life but when one *does* knock you on your rear, the doubter inside you creates "noise" about how this is just another book, and you've tried to change your thinking for a long time and why would this be it? But you know it's possible for an actual person to walk into your life and change a key distinction more than anyone else has before. Well, Eckhard Tolle will change your complete psychology, because he will take away the need for it.
You have a constantly accumulating "partyline" of voices that have come from events and things others have said to you or about you in the past. These voices want *you* to be their puppet - they want you to distract you at every possibly moment. They want you to be constantly judging and worrying and figuring out things that happen in your life while you're living each moment, so that you're NEVER PRESENT !
These voices aren't ONLY from the past. They are from the collective race-consciousness of other people on this planet. There is a "Watcher", there is a YOU, that is watching the "you" that was born on this Earth. If you stop your thoughts and literally stop evaluating each possible moment that went by and just stay with the THIS MOMENT, you will connect with the YOU. It is so powerful. (thus the title)
The way in which I looked at my life, and myself, and how to live, and what to think about this life on Earth ( and after this existence) can represent a building. Just picture that building in the middle of an empty parking lot. The words in this book are a Tomahawk missile that has now destroyed this building in a loud fiery explosion. I now look at each moment separately.
Why do you get stressed and get all raged out on the freeway, when someone driving behind you is three inches away from your fender, in their SUV, talking into their cell phone? Because you're letting the PAST drive your thoughts. What if you just take this as a brand new experience and forget about how much you disliked the person *yesterday* who was on a cell phone, swerving in front of you to make the entrance to the restaurant in time? If you lived in the present, you don't JUDGE.
If you live in the present, you're stealing the ammo of your earthbound personality from being able to prop up reasons why your blood pressure should skyrocket and be enraged. You're not judging. You're just simply acknowledging that people do what people do. You don't need to forgive that un-conscious person driving unsafely, because it's a neutral event, not bad or good. You just simply take action to remove yourself from the situation. Because NOW is *all* there ever is. (but don't try to fight those feelings of rage - they LOVE a good fight, they love attention.. just let them run their course - but just don't feed them with thoughts of past or future!)
I like how Tolle resolves questions about trying to reach your future goals, but living in the NOW
at the same time. 90% of the book is in a question and answer format, and he makes sure to cover every question you would have about what he is stating. Because you're here reading these reviews means you're ready to take your life to a new level.
My religious beliefs have changed a lot from being a Christian ( believing in Judgement and Damnation and original sin) in the past year (not from this book, just in general), to being strictly spiritual. But I'm not saying this book won't help you if you happen to be Fundamentalist. This book is for everyone. But be open-minded and let the truth touch you. If this book were to be read by the leaders of the major nations, there would be Peace on Earth.
Remember, you are it *all* right now, you don't need anything else.

It changed my life... August 27, 2000 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
It is my sincere opinion that this is the greatest book ever. Just after a few pages I knew what I was reading was the truth that I've been searching all my life. And it was always inside me... I have never felt so peaceful; it is as if I came home for the very first time. As I am reading this book I feel like I am reading my own "words" (words that were locked in a chest for a long time, until Eckhart Tolle gave me the key). Thanks Eckhart.
