Don't let the word "gunfight" put you off June 15, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very good review of the basics of shooting technique for use in IDPA and IPSC. I wish that there was more on practice drills but has some great pointers to improving your shooting or just moving on from the old "Weaver" stance.
Good Book for Beginners June 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Only complaint with book is waaaaaaaaaay too much time spent bashing the "weaver stance" and praising the "isosceles method". Bottom line, there is no magic position. Other than that, pretty good information, especially for new shooters.
Slightly disappointed June 3, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I give it four stars only because it's not a BAD book, and it's priced well.
For a little more money, you can get the 5th Edition of Combat Handgunnery, which has most of the same information, plus a lot of good information on choosing a pistol, ammo, holsters, etc. Ayoob (writer of Combat Handgunnery) seems to shoot with a modern isosolese stance with his elbows locked, which I can't get to work very well. Stanford cautions against shooting like this because besides not working as well, it's bad for your joints.
There are a few little things that I picked up from the book to try out, and the methods described in the books work well for me (it took me thousands of rounds to find what works), as well as many others.
Highly impressive, on mark, and tactically sound May 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Andy Stanford combines all the best concepts into a comprehensive book that not only shows but truly conveys solid shooting concepts. I would highly recommend this book to a beginning shooter.
The author reviews historical and model techniques to help bring his own into perspective. The author is opinionated but any good practitioner should have an opinion.
In several key areas the author stresses effectiveness versus rote "it must be done this way", which was refreshing.
I guarantee that I doubled by shooting ability, which was average at best, after reading this book. If the reader applies every concept or at least takes them into consideration his/her skill can not help but improve.
Excellent instruction. May 7, 2007 I really got a lot out of this book. In the military, we were trained to use the weaver stance. This book points out some of the advantages of the isosceles stance as well as of the mechanics and ergonomics. This book does a good job of teaching the other aspects of shooting such as grip, aiming, trigger control, etc. For shooters that have never had any formal instruction or that currently use the weaver stance, this book is highly recommended.
