Good but not the best November 10, 2004 30 out of 38 found this review helpful
If you hadn't practiced any martial arts or self-defense systems, this book would be useful to you. If you have had only half a year in Karate, you've seen these techniques.
The good: The techniques are simple and direct. Larry shows that multiple attacks are necessary. Whereas some books show a strike to the body and we'd expect the attacker to fall down. The techniques are shown standing and on the ground. The bad: Does not address knife fighting but does recommend that you seek other sources. Does not consider if the attacker grabs your arms or pins you when you're on the ground. To the uninitiated, one would assume that you need both hands to execute all the techniques. The techniques should be used more appropriately as a "first strike." For example, on the ground, you can perform the techniques, but it is not shown how to get him off you so you can get to your feet.
Conclusion: Good, sound techniques. But Larry could have put it all together into a system. Eg. Strike with technique 1, 3 or 5 then back him off with 2,4, 6, 10. If he doesn't back off, finish him with 7,8 or 12. Eg. If you're on the ground and he's in the mount position, hit him with 11, 12 or 2. When he's stunned, use your hips to bridge him. Stun him again with 1,3 or 5. Get to your feet and escape.
Easy to follow - practical. September 9, 2004 40 out of 45 found this review helpful
I have no interest in learning a martial art and wanted some easily learned steps to apply, should I get caught up in street crime (I am going to a country, for work, where street crime is high).
I knew a few of the tactics listed in the book (go for the eyes, groin, larynx or carotid artery / jugular). These were taught to me by an OTC instructor in college. This book is practical advice that can be learnt fairly quickly. The chapter on the winning mind is great.
The book is easy to follow, has enough illustrations, and gave me just what I wanted. Great book.
An excellent primer on Self Protection May 22, 2004 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Larry is one of the few people I've met who is no-nonsense and practical when it comes to Self Protection and Self Defense. I have been fortunate enough to train off Larry on several occassions and learn some of his fighting techniques as well as attend a course he ran on Close Protection (Bodyguarding) for civilians. This book contains simple, effective techniques which are applicable in many situations where you need you protect yourself. I highly recommend this book.
very good book on self-defense April 24, 2004 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is one of the better books available on the subject of self-defense. Black and white pictures, good descriptions and scenarios are covered. I've looked at a lot of books on this subject, and this is certainly worth the price. The book covers situations from a seated position, on the ground, standing, being grabbed, etc. The book is short and sweet and very easy to understand and put into practice.
Cut-and-dry self-protection book February 15, 2004 47 out of 51 found this review helpful
The techniques presented in this book are simple and deadly. They are meant to be used when one is facing a life and death situation. Many involve holding on to your opponent's head while delivering a potentially fatal blow. Some of these techniques are suited only for attacking the eyes or throat. If I were going on to the battlefield, this book would be all I'd need; however, in the civilian world, there are things that this book does not address, such as awareness and avoidance, and legal considerations. However, it does address different crimes that the reader may come up against, and having the proper mental attitude to deliver these fatal techniques. I'd recomend getting this book as a suplement to a more awareness-based self defense program; these are great techniques, but knowing when to use them is critical.
