Sewing 101 December 30, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Excellent book. It is being used for a Domestic Arts class in a small Christian Classical school and works quite well.
Nothing new December 25, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I received this as a Christmas present. I have several books on sewing from the 1956-1980 and I couldn't find anything in this book that wasn't covered in those. If you have no beginner sewing books this is very handy and well done - it has lots of photos and detailed explanations. If you have experience or an existing library this may be a waste of shelf space.
instructional,but December 7, 2007 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
i have spent hours researching and browsing different sewing books. basically a beginner,i haven't sewed since high school home ec class.i wanted to pick up where i left off, which is aprons and reconstructing thrift store finds.i am a artist,so what appeals to me is the beautiful, but not necessarily the complicated. so i look for key words like 'elegant' and 'practical' and 'simple'. this book has plenty of good instructions, but is sooo dated, unattractive and boring! i did not want to make anything in it! no inspiration! i give it three stars because it does teach you 'how to'...but,the elastic waisted skirts, smocks and pull on pants= ughhh... if i gave this book to my daughter and niece (13),they would never want to sew! i considered keeping it because of the how to roman shades pattern ( which i really do need because my house is full of windows )and instructions, but opted to just purchase the pattern somewhere else. once i return this book, i will have ~ 1-Vogue Sewing 2-Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing 3-Sew Everything Workshop,by Diana Rupp 4-Simple Sewing with a French Twist: by Celine Dupuy
these titles are either classic and timeless (vogue sewing,i will buy all of the vogue sewing books) or fresh and creative. i will give nods to cat wei & amy butler for inspiring the girls.our first project is lotta's yoga mat tote.the books are sitting on my dining room table next to my aunts old singer from the sixties and a new viking machine, causing everyone to stop, look and give a try...even some of the guys!
great starter book or refresher book November 5, 2007 I bought this book after taking up sewing as a hobby. I had learned to sew a little when I was much younger. This book helped provide a refresher course on things I had forgotten as well as teaching a few things I never knew. It had some project ideas which I have used and will use.
Easy on the eyes and too light on the instructions. September 10, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I thought that this would be a good reference for me, as I am new to the whole sewing thing. However, the book has no information in it that I could not find in more comprehensive guides to sewing. The pictures are colorful and the diagrams are somewhat helpful, but there is no information in this book that did not come in my sewing machine manual.
