5 out of 5 stars Building a studio? Get this book before you start.   December 26, 2007

I have just about all the other books out there on DIY studio construction. This is really the only one I use. The information is solid and the construction techniques are well laid out and easy to follow. It has saved my butt time and time again. Good work Rod!

5 out of 5 stars Don't Build Before You Buy!!   December 11, 2007

I'm a carpenter with building experience. But if you're thinking of building a recording studio or acoustic space, this is a MUST HAVE! The guy knows his stuff and lays it all out in a very comprehensive way. You don't need to be a math or science whiz to digest the info.

I'm building a modest (and quite simple) $3,000 studio in my basement. I first learned of Rod's book on the various studio-building website forums. The first money I spent on my studio was this book - and it should be your too!

It's simple:

-Decide to build.
-Buy the book.
-Read the book.
-Build it right.

A "MUST-READ" before any studio/acoustic build!

5 out of 5 stars Build It Like A Pro   December 9, 2007

This is one of the more important books on my shelf and I reference it quite frequently. As a recording studio designer, I like that I can buy a copy for a client with the assurance that I'm giving them a top quality product that is going to provide them with many answers they will have during the construction process, as well as give them a deeper understanding of how the various parts of the studio all work together to create a professional sounding environment.

Someone commented that the book didn't meet their needs. I think if you read it carefully, Rod's insight into acoustically treating your space is worth the price alone. One the important points is found in the question "what products should I use to create my studio?" Rod takes you through the myriad of products for which he has hands-on experience, to help you make those (often difficult and confusing) choices.

Rod condenses his hard earned knowledge of the essential components of successfully building a recording studio into a cohesive and comprehensive book. Rod has a web site full of useful calculators which (once you read the book and understand why you need them) will help you to quickly work out your own studio design. Even if you're not going to build it yourself, this book is something to share with your contractors so they understand why they may be doing something a bit different than they may typical do. And its the details you find in Rod's book that will make the difference between a high-end solution and a mediocre one.

This is definitely one of the important books that you need to have on your bookshelf if you are considering building a professional grade studio, or even if you are designing your own home theater.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete and Applicable Book I've Seen   December 8, 2007

I'm in the midst of my own studio build. I purchased this book about a year ago in preparation for doing this. I have turned to this book countless times when I researched how I could design for sound isolation and I cannot convey how happy I have been with always finding the exact answer and if not, pointers to how it may be done.

I give this book high rating in construction techniques which isolate sound to a particular room. Most beneficial to me have been framing issues, electric and hvac techniques.

This book has saved me wasted time and money. I am glad my purchase was done prior to my own studio work.

4 out of 5 stars If you're DIY, you need to read this book   December 1, 2007

I'm a bit OCD when it comes to audio books. I read everything that I can get my hands on regarding the subject. If you are truly interested in building a home studio the right way, this book will answer more questions than you would ever think to have.

I do not agree with the prior review. Sure, there's mention of expensive materials, but building a home recording studio is an expensive proposition; even on a budget. It's far more expensive than say...redecorating your home. It's design for a purpose that most homes are not designed for.

Rod Gervais brings years of experience to this book, and even the most inexperienced among us can benefit from a good read. This book can save you hundreds of hours, and potentially thousands of dollars. You can do it right, or you can do it twice. That's my own personal motto...and it certainly applies to home studio design.

Build It Like The Pros is the best tool for the job, IMO. If you are truly interested in building a home studio, this book is money well spent.
