The Girl Next Door Of The 1980's January 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I first obtained this movie I didn't know what to expect. Many times I saw this movie lying for rent in blockbuster, it had a catchy cover but the synopsis of the back cover never caught my attention. It wasn't until one of my friends gave away a whole bunch of 80's flicks and guess what? Risky business was there; so I went ahead and gave it a chance.
For those who are unfamiliar with the story of the movie then don't worry it's quite simple. The movie's plot revolves around the character of Joel (played by Tom Cruise) who is the ideal son; he gets good grades, perfect attendance, top of his class, and plus he is very obedient to his parents.....until.. Both of Joel's parents decide to take a trip out of town without Joel. They leave Joel the responsibility of the house, car etc. But when Joel's friends keep pushing him to take a chance at taking risks and having a good time Joel doesn't hesitate to think twice. So up to know everything is fun and games....until.. Joel meets a young charming prostitute named Lana (played by Rebecca de Mornay) who teaches him how to have a good time. there's a lot more story in the picture that of course is not new, it has been seen and used in many recent teen flicks, like The Girl Next Door, Orange County, American Pie. Actually the story of this movie is very similar to that of The Girl Next Door. for example; good boy gone bad, boy meets a hot girl which he thinks is out of his league, there's a pimp involved who control's the hot girl. All of these details are reminiscent in both flicks
As well the movie has some of the most memorable scenes, along with an awesome soundtrack from Tangerine Dream... Tom Cruise's first big staring role is still worth every penny even if it's heavily dated.
MY PERSONAL RATING: 4 OUT OF 5
Tom Cruise acting like an idiot....didn't need to buy the film for that! January 10, 2008 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
This was a Christmas gift, because I once mentioned I was curious to see the famous scene where young Tom Cruise is dancing in his underwear to rock'n'roll. It's the only scene I bothered to watch, because I pretty much napped throughout the rest. And I don't think we need to go out and buy this film, ladies and gentlemen, to see Mr. Cruise as the Dancing Fool, because there are, after all, going to be reruns of Oprah on...
I'M gonna call Misty! November 16, 2007 This was a great movie to rent and watch in my teens, and it's still fun. Forget what a jerk Tom Cruise is in real life, there's no denying this is fun (and that Rainman is superb, but that's another story). In this movie, TC plays Joel, a young man with sickening parents (are they EVER understanding in these movies? If they were, what kinda fun would it be to watch?). Joel's got a hot mom I wanna do it with, but she's preoccupied with her stupid egg. TALK ABOUT ANAL RETENTIVE!! Joel's just a decent guy who's horny and meets Rebecca DeMornay (daughter of Wally George, whose album ROCKS!! Wonder what happened to him...)...he meets Lana, and --no, I can't give away what happens in this tension-filled drama! Guido--man of a thousand nightmares--was it me, or did he seem like Pacino on the screen? Anyways, Joel looks up to his friend, Booger (don't we all?). Now, the unfortunate thing about this movie is that not enough time is given to Booger. But he has the best line, words to live by--'cept I have to censor it here--(ahem!)--"sometimes you just gotta say, WHAT THE HECK!!" And he's RIGHT!! For IF you do, you will soon be involved with a BE-YOO-TIFUL prostitute, and you won't have to listen to Phil Collins when you have sex. The ONLY bad scene is, unfortunately, the most famous one--Cruise dancing around in his underwear, miming to "Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" by Bob Seger. Now, I like some Seger, but not this cheesy-sounding song. WHEW! It's a damn good thing that the producers of this movie didn't choose some really GREAT tune--or even just a better one, like say, Takin' Care Of Business, that's a good song, and thankfully I don't think of Cruise dancing in his undies to it. Also good that no other Seger is used--I mean, it's not hard to imagine the train scene preceded by part of Night Moves, now that's a classic. This movie is great if you're young and horny; even Joel's teacher has a nice ass (good camera work). (if you like really sexually-oriented movies, I highly recommend Pretty Maids All In A Row--it's a dark comedy, but its just as non-stop tension-filled need-sex-now kinda deal as this. There's some genuinely tender moments in this, and Cruise has never been more likable in a film--hell, he's a creep in Rainman (and that's Dustin's movie all the way!). so, let's forget the brief scene of him dancing ("I'm not enjoying this...I think I'm gonna throw up!"). YEAH, it's too bad Booger didnt throw up on Cruise, but nevertheless this is one entertaining flick, with really only vague pretenses to reality. Unless you're looking for a really cerebral movie, you'll enjoy this. It's hard not to. STILL, I wish that the DVD could have added the original unreleased, shown-only-to-test-audiences ending, a real BUMMER one!! I'd love to see the original ending. Seriously, viewing this movie should be part of every young guy's adolescence. It's pretty cool--not a GREAT film, but who cares?! It's FUN. now GET OFF THE BABYSITTER!!! And check this flick out.

not that exciting, nor does it come with some amazing twists. maybe it fits the taste of the early 80's. the girl next door is more fun to watch, and damn, elisha cuthbert is hot.
Subversive December 11, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
A subversive, quintessential 1980s-style coming-of-age story, disguised as an 80s teen sex romp, set in the Chicago suburbs. It recasts the elements of William Faulkner's coming-of-age story, The Reivers--the young man (Joel), the old man's car (the Porsche), the corrupting influence (Curtis Armstrong), and Miss Reba's house (his parents' North Shore home), twisting them into a sort of Reagan-era fable where it's OK, even admirable, to be a pimp for a weekend. The moral: take responsibility for your own mess, get rid of the evidence, and exploit the corruptibility of your Princeton admissions rep.
